Reading Fault Codes

daniels right!

basics = go have a close look at your Air Flow meter. AFM. near the plug is a little round protrusion that will be in one of 3 states:

1. is covered by a black rubber stop thingy
2. looks like there is could be a hole underneath that shiny silver thingy
3. has had the shiny silver thingy removed, and in the depths of the brass insert you can see a screw.

if it isnt in state 1 or 2 - then its likely that someone has messed with the mixtures!

Thanks for the input guys. I will try get all the basics sorted before I do anything drastic.

The fuel filter and spark plugs is new as of today but, I think the AFM has been tampered with tho.

whats wrong with the car that you took it to the mechanic?
Have you replaced the DET and water temp sensor yet?
Checked timing?
spark plugs? checked all sensors are plugged in?
Basic wire loom check if you can see any signs of damaged wires?

It has been running very rich and stalling on deceleration if you push it hard.

I haven't changed any of the sensors yet... could the faulty sensors be causing the car to run like this?

Thx Daniel, I'l try get all those thing you mentioned looked at. I'm taking the car to a fuel injection specialist on monday.

Btw, where could I get replacement sensors from?

Thanks, veecee. I'l check and make sure. But my mechanic did mention that it had been tampered with.

Dude really, you have to change those sensors before taking it anywhere! the ECU is doing weird sh1t now, ofcourse its not going to run properly, its running rich probably because its trying to avoid det...you know with your faulty det sensor.

Watertemp probably most spares places, just take ur faulty one with you.
Det sensor, aint got a clue unfortunately

Ya, thanks, I've realized that now. I'm busy trying to get the sensors sorted atm.

I did some tests 2day. It seems that the engine coolant temperature sensor is working but the wiring to the ecu may be shorting somewhere... I followed the service manual's diagnostics for this. There is no continuity from either terminal to the ecu... There is continuity between the two terminals of the plug. Would this mean there is a short?

Also found out my det sensor isn't even connected... there is just a loose wire that I believe should connect to the sensor. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a plug on the end of that wire, or if it just connect straight into the sensor?? ... Not sure if the actual sensor is working or not coz its so damn hard to get to 🙂

Probably gonna try the resistor trick 2moro as a temporary solution and so that I can test if that wire is actually for the det sensor...

vveecee05 Nov 2007, 16:25

if there is no det sensor wire plugged in then there is no det sensor signal feeding to the ECU.

same with any kind of lack of continuity.

the ECU will definitely not like that! 😉

Hehe 😉 no it won't... I'm actually quite happy about this tho. Coz at least I know exactly what some of my problems are 🙂

I now know that the loose wire was definitely supposed to be connected to the det sensor... coz there is continuity between it and pin 23 on the ecu, as there shld be.

TTrance10107 Nov 2007, 21:51

I bypassed the det sensor 2day and rewired the engine coolant temp sensor. Now I'm getting code 55!! Meaning all is fine 🙂

My sx feel alot smoother now. I don't think it is running as rich as it was and the idle is much better 8)

... the revs still drop pretty low on deceleration but it hasn't sounded like it wants to stall yet. I'l find out if its better once I've driven her more.

TTobyadmin08 Nov 2007, 06:56

So you've bypassed the only protection your engine has gainst total meltdown? 😮

DDanielmoderator08 Nov 2007, 07:30

I dnt think that DET sensor is very good anyway, probably only offers very limited protection..

still rather have it working than not i suppose.

Temporarily until I can get to it to fix it properly and when I have a bit more time... its pretty difficult to get to u know 😉

TTobyadmin08 Nov 2007, 11:45

Ya, I exaggerate anyway 'cos the ECU will run in safe mode to prevent detonation. 😀

Guys Can you use a 300zx or 350z air flow meter on a 200sx S13?

Will there be any performance?

Anything negative any thing positive? :?:

VVladeadmin08 Nov 2007, 13:20

IIRC you can, but you need to recalibrate the whole thing

Not really required until you make big horses under the bonnet.... 200+wkw

DDrillergy08 Nov 2007, 16:48

My car makes around 12600w... 😂

TTobyadmin08 Nov 2007, 19:22

You can't just swop out the AFM! You must remap the ECU with the characteristics of your new AFM (much like you need to remap for different injectors) otherwise the fuelling will be all wrong and can lead to massive detonation.

Isthere anyone trained well enough to work on our cars, after looking at the horror stories I dont know what Im gonna do, probably go to PE for 3 months.

I realize this thread is relatively old, but has the problem been fixed?
