22nd Feb - A1 GP 2008, SX convoy to Durbs

TTobyadmin08 Feb 2008, 11:17

Snooby, how bad is traffic at 6am by Giloolys? 'Cos in Midrand, which is quite a traffic-inflicted area, 6am is still light traffic. I still maintain that East Gate mall roof is the best area to meet up. There's a ramp that takes you over the highway and back on, so it's real quick to get back on the highway, and we'll be going against the traffic at Gilooly's, so it should be a breeze.

SSnoobY08 Feb 2008, 16:48

Its bad esp north bound.. south bound not so bad... but for me to get there at 6 i will have to leave my house at like 5.. and am like 20km away. may be we should meat further down the n3 away from the city... say like i dono where is a nice garage on that road that every one knows???

TTobyadmin08 Feb 2008, 22:10

There isn't any, that's why I suggested East Gate. Also, we're *leaving* at 6am, we meet up there by 5:30am. That cool?

vveecee09 Feb 2008, 07:24

there's a garage on the N3 near heidelbrug somewhere. either just after the tollgate, or just before.

just a thought.

SSnoobY11 Feb 2008, 16:11

well the traffic is really bad north bound so i will be there lil earlier so that i dont hold you guys back... so i will be ther like 20 past 5

TTobyadmin11 Feb 2008, 20:22

Ok cool, settled then. If we're all there by 5:30am, then we can leave immediately - no need to wait. We'll wait latest till 6am, then chuck!

I'll post more info on trip preparations here, but for now:

- Don't mod your car pre-trip! It introduces possible reliability issues which is the last thing we need on a convoy trip! Ooops, too late, SnoobY 😀
- Please turn down boost, etc. and prepare your car for RELIABILITY! In particular, sort out oil leaks, water leaks, overheating issues, etc.
- Make sure your tires are good and check your spare!
- Carry some water for radiator and tow rope. You know these SX's 😂
- Carry drinking water and snacks so that we can do a long-ish first stint.
- Get your phone hooked up to MSN so we can do a group IM to keep in touch on the road. Anyone have a walkie talkie set?
- Is the forum interested in a roving blog? We can set something up so that we can blog from the road and during the weekend, if anyone is interested 🙂
- Bring binoculars if you got. Can come in handy during the race.
- Please don't bring laser jammers. They will get you arrested. Laser detectors are cool, but we won't be speeding anyways.

Any other tips?

Oops also too late here... Putting on a HUGE turbo want to suck in a couple of durbanites... Nah just fixing up, fuel tank, radio and car PC

I'll be alone in the car so typing while driving might not be the best idea... Walkie talkie... some sets are really cheap, maybe we should invest, I can try and borrow a set.

Wont that Push 2 Talk think on your cell phones work??

If anyone breaks down just let me know Ill come up in my dads bakkie full of tools to fix the problem 😂 .

You can download software like skype to do the same thing and without service provider charges. I hear Vodacom is R299 for 100 pushes.

SSnoobY12 Feb 2008, 11:03

Dudes its called MXIT we can chat there its vertually free. only thing is the connection will drop now and then going between towers. but it should not be a problem.

GGary5712 Feb 2008, 11:12

Yeah but then you are typing while driving, rather talk and keep your eyes on the road.

TTobyadmin12 Feb 2008, 11:57

Well if you can load FRING, that will be great then we can talk like on skype. Otherwise, we use good 'ol SMS.

More tips:
- Buy yourself a REALLY small foldable chair - those grand stands are VERY uncomfortable and even a blanket is not enough cushioning. And a pillow is too big to carry around. The chair has to be small to fit on the grandstand "bench"
- Bring sun block and caps/hats/umbrella
- If you got ear plugs, bring those. It's VERY loud and your ears go numb after a while. Ear plugs will be on sale tho
- Bring SA flags and any other form of support. You'll get to be on TV if you bring something whacky.

and dont forget the 200sx club caps & banner!!!!

😂

Maybe someone should take one of those tyre refill kits, you get the one that comes with plugs, CO canisters etc and they only like R150.

PS: Hotstuff why arent you coming down??

HHotstuff12 Feb 2008, 15:38

My car will be in CT for complete strip down and respray unfortunately... I'm aiming to have it done by the 08 march so that I can go fetch it and watch the NDS at the same time...

🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Geez, you can forget about voice chatting during the race, even if you are seated next to each other 😂

SSnoobY13 Feb 2008, 12:46

Hey toby any idea, what the plans for the weekend will be like are we all going together every day or jus for the convoy those sort of things?

GGary5713 Feb 2008, 13:02

I think it will be cool to meet up more than once. Maybe we should take a drive at night somewhere??
