oil - your choice

vveecee03 Mar 2008, 08:55

hey draco...

mine kept on doing this too.

i found that because the seal is a big fat rubber thing, when you tighten on screw, the others are left slightly loose.

my solution:

i used lock-tite on the thread of the screws, and i kept tightening in a similar pattern to the headbolts (for example). and then i left it for a while to let the lock-tite set. after that - no problem.

Thanks VC, I'll try the locktite...

Ok So wil 20W50 work until I service my car? cause I need some oil!

HHancoB21 May 2008, 19:39

Ja that is fine Riekert, I ran mine on that from the start. The previous owner had synthetic in and that was just a waste!

Cool!

I'm gonna service the car this weekend so...

HHancoB21 May 2008, 19:44

Use Shell. When I did my headgasket last week it was the cheapest.

TTrance10121 May 2008, 19:49

@Gary - What oil went into my sx after the rebuild?

(Sorry for the hijack 😳 )

dude - you ARE a n00b!!!

how can you say synthetic is a waste???

wait till your oil cakes in your turbo journals!!!

HHancoB21 May 2008, 21:43

ok so why pay a hell of a lot more when you have to change the oil at the same time and it does the same thing. Prove to me that synthetic oil is better!

Maybe that is noobnyness!!!

HHancoB21 May 2008, 21:45

If its so good for your car why dont they use it in the WRC? Why dont they use it in F1? or any other motorsport????

It is a sales trick just to make more money out of noobs!

vveecee21 May 2008, 22:40

pfffttt - just a sales trick...

here's an excerpt:

How much do you value the engine in your car? Think about it, because the life of your engine depends in no small part on the quality of the oil you put in it - oil is the lifeblood of your car's engine. From the mid 80's for 8 or 9 years there was a veritable revolution in car engine oil. All oils were no longer the same thanks to the popularity of hot hatches, 16-valve engines and turbos as the tuner scene started to rise. Combined with the devastating problems of black death, the days of one oil catering for everyone were over.

go to the full article here http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html because i dont feel like retyping the heaps of info that there is out there, proving the fact that the better oils ARE actually better!

pay particular attention the BLACK DEATH and SLUDGE sections.

HHancoB21 May 2008, 22:47

Still doesn't prove that synthetic is better????

vveecee22 May 2008, 06:52

OMG!

i guess you just cant help it.

what worries me is that you are giving others advice like, "just use normal shell helix" cos the xost of the synthetic stuff is not justified.

yet the cost of rebuilding turbos and engines far outweighs 300 bucks for 5 litres every 5-10 thousand km's.???

ccape town drfter22 May 2008, 07:41

HI Guys
On my previous twin cam 16v corolla I only used Mobil 1 never had engine blow-up It made 138kw which was wicked for a 1600 eight years ago ,8000rpm every weekend on the N2 Cape Town,Current vehicles S13 and S14 are all running on Castrol TXT full synthetic all the way 😈 😈 .cannot afford Mob1 ......... 😳 I do an oil change every 5000km..

GGary5722 May 2008, 08:13

Hanco every heard of Mobil 1, F1 use it so do WRC. If there was no benefit of synthetic oil why would Shell offer it over the cheap Shell helix??

Trance you have Magnatec in there now and you when you do the oil change it will be Castrol SLX.

HHancoB22 May 2008, 09:03

So why does my mechanic who is a well known tuner and has built a few sx that was on loads of events and mags tell me I shouldn't bother using synthetic???

If you guys are such good tuners why aren't you so good that we hear of your cars making it everywhere??? All we hear is that this is no broken and that is now broken.

back to the oil...you know that dog food and bully beef is one and the same thing??? just different packaging! That is how they are fooling us with things like that. It has been proven on many a motor show.

GGary5722 May 2008, 09:35

If you guys are such good tuners why aren't you so good that we hear of your cars making it everywhere??? All we hear is that this is no broken and that is now broken.

SORRY, have you ever heard me bitching about my car breaking?? I have had it over 160RwKw for the past 2 years, I drive it every day. It has been at 200RwKw for nearly the past year, still no issues. So dont come saying that my car is always breaking, cause it one of the most reliable here. The fact that we dont built these "tuner" cars is $$$, where do you expect me to shit that much $$$ from hey?? The last I saw these so called "tuners" dont build these cars for free, most of the cars they build are customers cars so not 1c somes out of their pocket.

Please hanco maybe you and your mechy know something more that the chemists at Shell, Mobil 1, Castrol etc, and you guys should go teach the engineers that design engines something. You obviously know than they do, or is it that you are just regurgitating what your Mechy is telling you??

PS: Hanco what do you do for a living?? Is it anything to do with engines, or cars for that matter??

HHancoB22 May 2008, 09:45

Mechanical engineering student!

And yes he did actually build that car with his own money.

And no you still didnt prove that its better.

GGary5722 May 2008, 09:47

A student, I am a mechanical engineer, what year are you in??

DDracomoderator22 May 2008, 09:49

Gary...sorry but I need to say something here....the fact that your car has been relieble for the last 2 years may have no connection to the oil you use, not to say I know more or anything about oil, forget about the oil, mostly our cars break because of cheap fixes and wrong setups....we can blame oil as much as we want.....but be honost....no one on this forum could without any doubt say the oil caused the breakdown....of a turbo or a motor
