Throttle Body

Why not??

By regrinding you will only change the duration and not the lift, so you will make more power higher up the rev range.

mmario_200sx05 May 2008, 13:22

thats what I heard....... Not saying its true or not, thats why im asking.

Im stupid when it comes to cams! so by regrinding your cams you cant push up the lift???? If not, there goes my plans!

HHancoB05 May 2008, 13:51

OK I dont get why you want to increase the lift. The duration is the important factor. The longer the cam opens the more A/F can go into the chambers the more power you will gain...right.

So dont worry about the lift. Anyway some tuners told me the CA18DET cams are good, you cam get alot more power out of them if you just get adjustable cam gears!

mmario_200sx05 May 2008, 13:52

the combi with lift and duration with the cam gears is the ultimate, cams are good but not to the full potential.

GGary5705 May 2008, 14:19

HAHA, longer duration will make the motor more efficent higher up the rev range, more lift will make the motor more efficent throughout the rev range.

Lift is VERY important, if it wasnt you would be able to by higher lift cams no would you.

You can increase the lift on a cam by regrinding it, but you better trust your machinist.

mmario_200sx05 May 2008, 14:27

ok, thanks gary.... makes sense.

Will get back to you on details! 😂

DDoctor G05 May 2008, 15:13

Excuse my ignorance but how can you increase the lift on a cam by regrinding it?

The only way to incrase lift is for the cam lobe to physically have more metal on it to stand up higher than the stock cam.

The regrinding can only alter the duration AFAIK.

@hancoB. Turbo cars don't like overlap, so the rule of thumb is that you don't want massive duration. Lift is prefered.

Mario I say go 270 with 11mm lift. (Oh yeah that's total lift)

GGary5705 May 2008, 15:22

They regrind the journal off center so increasing lift.

I 270 degree cam will be far to much, unless you want to make power from 5500 - 9000.I would say 264degrees will be more than enough if you after top end power. 256 would be a good compromise. Also if you going with cams like these dont forget cam gears hey.

mmario_200sx05 May 2008, 15:36

I thought 8.1mm lift is max? 😢 (Confused!)

HHancoB05 May 2008, 17:27

Ja I know that...overlap for any car is bad!

What I meant was how can you get more lift from a cam by just grinding it? The height is already set. Thats how I understand it.

And the higher the peak power the more k@k your drive is going to be. I think more power through the rev range is better. Imagine the lag your gonna get from driving a car with high lift cams...to pull away you need to hit 4500rpms...

I like torque!!!

vveecee05 May 2008, 19:39

you wont increase the lag by increasing the lift??? 😮 😮 😮

if you just change lift and not duration - you will get more air into the engine at the same timing as before. this means you will get more bang (and thus more torque) without changing characteristics. if you increase the duration slightly you will get better breathing (specially at the top end).

a mild increase with a lot of lift is best for turbo cars.

N/A cars need long durations like 300 so that at the top end of the revs they can breath well enough to make power - but this is at a detriment to the lower end of the rev range because of the overlap. so overlap is not bad either. it all depends on what you want to achieve!

anyway - engineers will increase the lift of the cam by welding up the lobes with a specialised welding process, and then regrinding the lobe to the desired duration and lift!

mmario_200sx06 May 2008, 08:21

ok, so how much lift can I go safely?

DDoctor G06 May 2008, 10:32

I've seen tomei cams with 256 and 8.8mm lift, so there is a viable option maybe.

GGary5706 May 2008, 11:26

8.1mm lift is max with stock lifters. 8.8mm is max with solid lifters.

mmario_200sx06 May 2008, 11:29

8.1mm it is, 256deg. Does that sound ok? dont want to shift the powerband too high.

GGary5706 May 2008, 12:00

8.1mm and 256 sounds great, will make some nice power at 4500rpm and up.

Is this for just the intake or exhaust aswell??

GGary5706 May 2008, 12:19

I think 265 might be too long for the exhaust. Get a set of cam gears, so you can tune them to exactly where you want, on a dyno obviously.

mmario_200sx06 May 2008, 12:23

thats going what im doing with the cams.

Already know of a set of cam gears to buy.

GGary5706 May 2008, 12:36

Great stuff. Just put it on a dyno before you put the cams and cam gears so we know how much power and Nm those cams and gears make.
