LSD diff or not?

pphoenix s1422 Sept 2009, 10:22

seriously the propshaft will be locked but you will have only the diff working. hence the non viscous gear diff will just spin internally with no brake but the viscous diff will try to brake the effect (slip).

(dont try this at home) - if you jack up one wheel and start the engine and engage a gear and it does not pull off the jack then you have a normal diff... 😂 😂 😂 if it does go to hospital and you have a LSD...

I like my church test better...

Visuals of the difference

Normal z31 diff:open

Mine:sepposedly LSD

Now the question beggs....why would someone put a diff cooler cover of an LSD on an open diff?

vveecee22 Sept 2009, 12:19

to cool it down???

i agree with sokar's test! it rocks the neighbourhood!

but if you have to do it the girlpantz way then please jack up both sides of the rear end!

DDracomoderator22 Sept 2009, 12:21

What did they do with the LSD?(why would they take the cover off a LSD and not just replace the diff)

Why would an open diff need cooling?

vveecee22 Sept 2009, 16:56

mashing gears covered in oil get hot. keeping it cool is not a bad idea!

is there any evidence that its been opened?

do the test man - either do a burnout/donut and look for 2 stripes, or jack up the rear and make sure the wheels turn in the same direction!

DDracomoderator23 Sept 2009, 07:41

Burn out or do nut is not an obtion at the moment....left rear wheel bearing is on it's whay out.....

As soon as I have my jack back the car will go up for the check.

and that is the story....as i said...I am supposed to have an 3.54 open diff
but it has a finned cover.....

I'll have to do the test.....

3300sx24 Sept 2009, 08:19

yeah sorry, should have put a comment 😉 what i meant was EVERY source says the finned covered diffs are lsd, so that must simply mean you have a lsd .. nuff said 8)

CCharlvdw26 Sept 2009, 21:30

Do you want to borrow Deriks jack from me?? 😂

DDracomoderator28 Sept 2009, 09:29

Results:

With one side jacked up, other on floor.....

not in gear: wheel turns freely...

in gear: wheel locks up....

So....is it or is it not a lsd?

DDracomoderator29 Sept 2009, 08:38

Spoke to a diff company yesterday, although the guy never saw a diff like mine he said all I explained to him and what he saw on the pic I sent him indicates that it is an lsd.....

Aperently if it was open it would still be able to turn even though the car was in gear.....

So all indicated that the origenal diff was removed and replaced by an lsd.....

Dude... no. Unfortunately it sounds like an open diff to me.
The only way one wheel will turn if the other is on the ground and the car is in gear is if the engine is also turning or the diff is broken. (I don't think that's your case.)

Go to www.howstuffworks.com and look up how a diff works. Then from that work out yourself what you have. Its clear now you only know enough to confuse yourself.

I think these dudes need to stop smoking the good stuff and concentrate on how diffs work... geesh who did you speak to so I dont ever take my diff there??? will turn even if in gear???... no drive shafts??????

Dude....it should have been clear from the start that I only knew enough about diffs to confuse myself....that is why I searched the net and asked a question on this forum....but glad you caught on eventually 🙄

I first assumtion was that I had an open diff....but the finned cover still makes me ask why?

SSokar01 Oct 2009, 12:55

I agree with Guy, sounds like an open diff...

Nissan SA has a habit of throwing the production specs out the window, you might find that they thought because we have a sub saharan climate the diffs might need extra cooling and fitted all the diffs covers with fins.

DDracomoderator01 Oct 2009, 14:38

I agree...it seems it is an open diff....and your theory of the cover makes sense.

VVeNoMiZeR01 Oct 2009, 17:31

umh ja its open diff.. trust me it will only spin the one wheel in that 300zx Draco, checked on my 200zr and got a spare diff that looks like the one you posted 1st with no fins
