Hydraulic lifters

AAndrew.200SX24 Nov 2009, 08:23

I couldn't work on it yesterday , because I hurt my back quite badly in the gym .

I am all drugged and braced up today , so I did a compression test now and the compression looks right , but the battery is allmost flat again , so I am charging it now.

It didn't sound like it wanted to start though anyway.

I am very tempted to put the old lifters back and re-check.

Bloody thing is driving me nuts.

AAndrew.200SX24 Nov 2009, 10:58

What are the chances that the power transistor decided to go for a ball of shit ?

The manual says to check that the rev counter's needle moves while cranking , mine isn't moving at all, and the compression is right now,and still, no go !! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I just pulled no:1 spark plug and coilpack and when I put the ignition on there is spark.....and I can smell the fuel...so WHY won't she fire up !! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

rratadmin24 Nov 2009, 11:16

maybe it is flooded, this did happen to me. and you can crank as much as you want and nothing happens

I was cranking it with the plugs out this morning when I checked the compression and now the bastarding battery is dead again.

Now I am starting to get frustrated. I thought my Opel was a pain in the ass when it wouldn't start, but the SX takes the cake. Where to start?!?

CCharlvdw24 Nov 2009, 11:26

Disconnect your battery while its charging. Just to reset the ecu.

AAndrew.200SX24 Nov 2009, 11:30

I allways disconect the battery while charging , because I am allways scared that the charger will cock something up.

I am now contemplating putting the old lifters back and re-trying,but surely if the compression is correct then it can't be the lifters holding the valves open.

There was only 1 very slightly noisy lifter , but at least the bloody thing ran !

i think this might be one of those frustrating times where during disasembly/asembly to fix one thing, something else got buggered up, without you realizing.. so now you keep thinking you fixed it wrong, meanwhile something totaly unrelated gave up the ghost.. very frustrating ๐Ÿ˜ข

maybe start thinking what all got removed in order to replace the lifters? like cas, ect.. mayhap the cas timing has gone for a loop, i have done this myself before, i broke the little locating tab off the exhaust cam without realizing.. just a thought.

AAndrew.200SX25 Nov 2009, 06:33

Yeah. I put the old lifters back and again she started and ran for 2 seconds and now again no joy. I have another mechanic coming out this morning to give her the once over and see if he can figure out what the hell is going on.

Compression does seem to be a bit low on cylinders 2 , 3 & 4. On 1 the compression is at 1000 kpa, and the rest 800.

AAndrew.200SX25 Nov 2009, 09:22

Re-checked the compression this morning...... 1000kpa on 1 and 0 on 2,3 & 4.
Fantastic.
Just had another mechanic here, and he says that the head needs to go to engineering to sort out the lifters with the cams ! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Surely there must be another way. Money doesn't grow on trees. I thought I hit a luck with the lifters , but now it is starting to get expensive.

Dude - your valve seats are probably cut too deep, thus your lifters are bottoming out and you don't get comp.

To test this, turn the motor till the valves are closed. Get a piece of wood or something and press on the lifters below the cam (with the cam in) if they can move a little bit they're fine. If they can't compress a little then they are bottoming out. This means that you will either have to have the head removed and fixed (lots $$) or take the offending lifters out - open them up and put the inside valve part in a lathe and trim a SMALL amount (like 0.5mm) off of the inside end that the little cap thing sits over (the little chamfered edge).

This is NOT the correct way to do it, but it will work (less $$).

AAndrew.200SX25 Nov 2009, 09:44

Sure , but the car was running perfectly. I just had to be an asshole and replace them because 1 lifter was intermittently noisy. How can everything go pear shaped just by changing the lifters ?!?!? I have put the old lifters back , but of coz didn't mark and put them back in the same place, so now I have even less compression than I did with the new ones.

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH !!!!

When she eventually starts , I am going to smoke the rear tyres all the way down to the inside of the bloody rims !! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

3300sx25 Nov 2009, 10:08

i feel your pain ๐Ÿ˜• good luck mate...

AAndrew.200SX26 Nov 2009, 10:27

I decided to make 1 last attempt at starting my beast by using this link - ( Mimento - http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=300508&postid=3656765 ) to bleed the lifters and make sure that I have 16 solid bled lifters in the car.

When I removed the CAS the shaft and the bearing stayed behind in the cam. How the hell it snapped in half , I couldn't tell you, probably from all the swinging, but now I desperately need a Cam Angle Sensor.

And after I get one I must still get compression by hoping that the lifters will be right.

Thanks to Riaan from the Strand. I got a CAS from him yesterday , Even with an almost flat battery , she fired up first click. I am going to smoke the rear tyres now like I promised and then weld the bonnet shut ! :!: ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Thanks again to all.

Cheers guys .

See you on the roads in my "SHE-DEVIL"

๐Ÿ˜ˆ

rratadmin30 Nov 2009, 08:36

awesome you got it sorted

3300sx30 Nov 2009, 08:36

nice.. glad you got it right, nothing as frustrating as sukkeling with a fault for ages.. 8)

AAndrew.200SX30 Nov 2009, 10:00

Thanks guys. That CAS must have broken when I originally put the car back together after installing the lifters. She started and ran for 3 or 4 seconds and then it was backfiring and then dead.

Anyway , now she is running like a demon again and the lifters are dead quiet and I just scared the crap out some guys, running the length of my road with the ass snaking from side to side.... as promised ! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

DDracomoderator30 Nov 2009, 10:57

Great to hear....com on dude....the Ca can't spin ๐Ÿ˜€

AAndrew.200SX30 Nov 2009, 12:22

HEYYYYY . ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ˜‚

If I new how to, I would load a video of her spinning and show you :!: ๐Ÿ˜‚

What is the best place to get a FMIC kit in Cape Town ? I don't wat to pay Motorcade R5000.

I won't be doing it now anyway, this little lifter jobbie cost me enough, as well as stressed me out beyond belief. My medicinal bill went up quite substantially ! glug glug

๐Ÿ™„

DDracomoderator30 Nov 2009, 12:56

Take a breather and recover before you start the next stressfull experience....

Just to tip you off...I had a lot less stress then most when fitting my FMIC....I did not remove bumpers, I did not relocate batteries....63mm pipe out from turbo underneath cross bar throuh intercooler under crossbar up to throttle body. Just needed to do minor cutting with a small angle grinder to fit FMIC.

Made hinges from flat bar to hold FMIC and walla.....took me two days.....if you have a welder and all the bits you can do it in 1/2 a day.
