Front Speakers

I think VeeCee should fit some 6.5" mids and do another How-To so I know.

DDracomoderator11 Apr 2007, 13:45

I am planning to put in my 6.5" splits some time then I will do the how to thing if someone else didn't yet.

GGary5711 Apr 2007, 13:50

I'm abit envious.
I don't even have a radio 🙁
I do have the standard speakers tho. maybe I should just hook up a karaoke machine in there instead......hhhmmm.
I can do a How to on that. 8)

too late she cried!!!!

its done, i've got that t-shirt, and there was not a camera in sight, but what i could do is strip out my equipment, start again and take some pics. but that would cost a few beers.

another thing - widow - you wierd. sometimes i think you should be locked up!!!

another thing - 6x9's are crap in my opinion. but i have no fact to back it up.

i installed 6.5" splits. the mids replaced the original crappy things, i threw the molds out long before that, so i didnt have to modify.

i first installed them with makeshift spacers. this was to prevent the magnets hitting the glass when down - as toby referred too. it worked mostly, but when you closed the door with the windows down, they rattled against the magnets. the speaker suspension rubber was also touching the door card, so it sounded distorted at high volume.

instead i removed them, built a fancy spacer out of 12mm MDF, and attached that with self-crapping screws to the door frame. the spacer was fancy because it fits in there with modding the door card clips and things.

i then cut a hole into that and mounted the speaker to that. no problem. no touching on glass, no touching on door panel, very solid, and no distortion...

but... i had to remove the original speaker covers, and trim the hole into a round shape that matched the mids... i haven't gotten around to covering the ugly holes yet.

and i mounted the tweeters at the top of the door card!

forgot to mention:

still have the template that i used. and the template was 12mm MDF, the cutouts that actually were fitted to the door were produced from 16mm MDF board.

shot!

I think I will try get some 6.5" mids in there.

for you, i'll take a photo of the template that i used with a ruler of some sort, so you get an idea for dimensions.

its a strange shape, but it worked for me. the 6.5's sound great, but i've had to modify my door cards - important point that. i couldnt use the original speaker mesh covers!

GGary5712 Apr 2007, 10:42

i want to use the original door covers!!! I will modify the speaker mould to house the 6.5".

then measure the depth that you have available when your window is down.

compare that to the speaker depth specs on the box before you buy it!

when mine was again the metal, it hit the glass. when it was spacered out correctly, i had to cut the door card!

i should've looked at this link:

http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/183809

cos the strange thing is that my template is almost exactly the same.

funny how great minds think alike!!!

here's pics of the plate for the 6.5" round speaker off that site.

LOL - thats the strangest thing!

and here's a link to the template for the adapter board!!!

VVladeadmin13 Apr 2007, 07:45

And if you do it that way you stock cover still go over nicely? Well they must have since your one's where on when I was in your car.

vveecee13 Apr 2007, 09:39

LOL - thats how observant you are:twisted: they weren't. i cut them lekka, and you can see the speakers sticking through because i haven't made some nice covers yet.

but now i'm thinking that myself and widowmakers should make some CF bits for that!!

would be very nice i reckon!

vveecee13 Apr 2007, 09:42

BUT - two things:

1. the speakers on that pic look like 3 way 6 inch rounds. maybe 6.5". but being 3 way - they will be much shallower speakers. i.e. the magnet wont stick out as far in the back.

my speakers were quite deep, because its a midbass speaker from a set of splits.

2. becozof point 1 i used thicker board. the pic looks like its 12mm mdf or something. mine was 16mm, to stop the magnet hitting the glass. so i had to cut out round holes in the door cards to match the speakers. now i must build something to cover the whole lot!

becoz of becoz!

GGary5716 Apr 2007, 09:17

Ok I fitted some 6.5" 2 way speakers on the weekend and what a piece of piss. It was so simple to do. I used hard board to cut the backing from. I bought Sony speakers they are only 45mm deep and R200 😂 .
