In that BP ad did you notice the white guys are cleaning inside the motor while the black guys own the car 😕 .

Didn't notice. Affirmative action adverts 😂 😂

@Warren
yeah piping just like Chemcools. How does it run without the cooler?
I'm sure not as much power as one with a cooler, but I'm sure you got no lag.
Also their is a version of a CA18det that didn't have a cooler(fwd I think)

So running without a cooler....how good/bad is that?

its ok, if you want to go through engines like dirty underwear.

these cars were designed with intercoolers, and their electronic control modules think that they have coolers. if you then remove it, you are very prone to detonation as a result of excessively high intake temperatures.

that'll hurt a motor.

and a cooler doesnt affect lag that much. the design and matching of the turbo system and engine capacity has a far greater affect on lag than a cooler will have.

You know woohaa it actually runs surprisingly well. Start getting into good boost around 2500-2800, so not much lag or anything. Still feels pretty powerful hey! 🙂

But ja it definatley is more prone 2 detonation, particularly when its hot (so now its not so bad). But I can only imagine that its got less power than it SHOULD have with the cooler. As VeeCee says, the car thinks it has one, so it can't be running near its optimum effeciency. But as I say even without it, it really runs very well, just shows what a good motor it is 😀

And without the cooler, 95 causes 2 much detonation as Brator says, so with the cooler + 95 = 😈

No offence meant but Dude that is scary stuff, damn. My eyes water just looking at the photo, don't forget to shoot the guy which suggested that without fitting some form of water/methanol injection. 😮

WWarrenS1325 May 2007, 11:44

Haha don't worry none taken! Ja nobody suggested anything, i bought the car as is, with the intention of fixing it up (Which i know is probably more expensive than bying a good one, but its more fun/satisfying this way 🙂 )

vveecee25 May 2007, 11:51

dude - i dont think calibrator meant that 95 causes more detonation?

as far as i understand, a higher ron value on petrol means that it is less prone to detonation!

Without an intercooler your car is probably detonating all the time. Running 95 isnt an option on that car.

hmmm I dunno dude, maybe i misunderstood him? I think its the combo of no intercooler + 95 that'll cause it??

vveecee25 May 2007, 12:00

as vlade said - i think he meant it isn't an option its a must.

if you run 93 and no cooler, its worse than running 95 and no cooler.

why do you think guys who choon for high boost, do it with racing juice??? racing fuel is 102.9 octane - far less prone to detonate than 95 (pumpjuice)!

WWarrenS1325 May 2007, 13:21

Ja that definatley makes sense hey. But I thought he maybe said that cause my car wasn't running properly on 95 and he reckoned it was cause of no intercooler + 95. But ja you're probably right. at any rate I'm getting the intercooler fitted tommorow so I'll see what 95 does! 8)

GGary5725 May 2007, 13:26

Gone are the days of us DBN guys getting 97 octane 😢 , not that 2 octane points would make much difference 😂 .

WWarrenS1325 May 2007, 13:32

Ja why is that?? I was in durban in december and i drove around 4 ages trying 2 find damn 97 octane! 🙁

GGary5725 May 2007, 13:50

We only used to get 97 leaded and when they took away leaded and gave us LRP we lost the 97 aswell.

WWooHaa25 May 2007, 16:56

@VeeCee.
Wot you say is right, however the cooler definatley causes lag, that is very noticable.
i spoke to Chemcool who used to run the stock cooler & who now runs it without a cooler.
& if I remember correctly, (let me know if I'm wrong Chemcool) he said that there is ALMOST no lag.
Turbo spools up much faster.

vveecee25 May 2007, 17:00

it does cause lag because the air on the cold side of the cooler takes up less space, and therefore takes longer to fill a space of the same size.

but it is not that hectic, unless you are running a very efficient cooler, against a very big turbo - this is based on what i've read!!!

remember, i've mentioned about my butt dyno needing some fine tuning!

hehehe.
you funny.
