Noise Problem

bearing knock is normally worse when hot, because the oil is thinner or my thinking wrong?

GGary5713 Jul 2007, 10:44

You thinking right. Piston slap is louder when the motor is cold because the piston is smaller when cold.

yeah my car sounds like a friggin tiger ready to unleash itself on the streets when its cold!!!

but i heard they making new pistons with little ball bearing in the skirts to even out the pistons travel!!! not sure about it though, just a rumour so far!

VVladeadmin13 Jul 2007, 11:07

of you buy CP pistons like me which doesn't really have much pistons slap... Forgies without the slap

vveecee13 Jul 2007, 11:14

why yours different?

how do they take the slap out of the forgies?

VVladeadmin13 Jul 2007, 11:19

alloy concentrate or something like that...

vveecee13 Jul 2007, 11:20

my alloy is also concentrated, so i dont get it. i say this cos i reckon all the little bits are squished together during the forging process???

I'm gonna get Arias forged pistons though, is that also good? Where did you buy the CP pistons and how much were they?

a more important question is "how long did they take to get to SA?"

Probably because he had to bore the engine and they had to custom make his Pistons, I think

vveecee13 Jul 2007, 14:11

but, uuuh, i had to custom bore the block to fit my pistons???

DDracomoderator13 Jul 2007, 14:21

How big did you go VC....I went 40 vel....I understand 60 is almost the limit our blocks can go.....

vveecee13 Jul 2007, 14:31 · edited

you know me... i always say:

GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!

well... i sometimes always say it.

actually, i hardly ever say it. oh well.

i went a mm oversize!!!

VVladeadmin13 Jul 2007, 14:31

good luck on finding 60th 😮

DDracomoderator13 Jul 2007, 14:35

Ok so you(VC) also went 40 fel...20fel is 0.5mm....ok....so the quistion still beggs....how far can our blocks go....anyone....that is taking into consideration that you still want it dependable....

vveecee13 Jul 2007, 14:38

i dont think much further than 40, but you could always resleave?

VVladeadmin13 Jul 2007, 14:38

Not sure but you don't find parts past 40th so I guess 40th

DDracomoderator13 Jul 2007, 14:41

So if I go 20 fel over size....can I still use standard rings....I know more then you need but is it neccesary for 0.5mm over size

TThe Calibrator13 Jul 2007, 18:53

Forged pistons slap because ppl run HUGE bore clearances because u had to in the old days which in this day and age are not needed.

"Custom boring" Does this mean bore the block to suit the pistons? I thought that was the only way to build a decent engine.

Remove engine to fit Arias pistons and overhaul it later? Did I understand this correctly? Why doesnt it make any kind of sense?
