fan switch.

where would be the ideal place for a fan switch? top or bottom hose?

EEro_sennin20 May 2008, 20:46

Not sure but I would think the rad inlet hose as that's the temp of the hot water coming from the engine?
Or does anybody else have a better suggestion?

On this very same forum, during the days of calibrator, it was discussed. I just cant remember where exactly.

The bottom hose, ALWAYS.

HHancoB21 May 2008, 09:40

Always the hot hose which is the bottom hose in this case!

EEro_sennin21 May 2008, 10:21

yay thats what I said

A bit of advice.....use the coldest switch you can find, as far as I remember it was a volkswagen switch, switches on somewhere in the 80 digree mark....others only switch on in the late 90's...witch is almost boiling point.....

vveecee21 May 2008, 17:33

i had a bmw 3 series switch on my ca18 which gave me two temp settings, 80 something degrees and 90 something degrees.

i had 2 electrical fans setup, the lower switch would turn on the first fan, and the higher temp switch would turn on the second fan!

DDracomoderator22 May 2008, 08:21

Wow thats cool VC......but any fan switch switches on at a certain digrees and switches off again when it reaches the colder digrees......switches on at say 89 digrees and off on 80 digrees for example....and gues what.....it's the same switch 😮

DDracomoderator22 May 2008, 08:25

More advice, if you run 2 fans, use a 30 amp relay, most fans use about 7.5 amps each, so u connect the switch, from there to the relay and the relay splits to the fans.....switching them on and off as the temp switxh goes on and off......and guess what......it's done buy the same switch 🙄

Ha ha ....can't help mocking VC..... 😂

AAR 200SX22 May 2008, 17:29

i have a 82' fan switch and the thermostat opens @ 76'. and i am using a relay cause it's 2 12 inch fans. fitted it in the bottom hose and it seems to work leka. 😂

dont be a tjop draco...

i meant the same switch unit turns on the first fan at 80 something, and then turns on the second fan at 90 something.

that means i only use one fan while the temps aren't that high, but if it gets too high then both the fans run at the same time!

DDracomoderator23 May 2008, 08:36

Just don't eat me VC....please!!!!! I know I'm a tjop but I'm not lekke 😂 😂

Was mocking you a bit grumpy, cos you did not make it clear....us tjops don't read around the corner you know..... 😉

I got all tjopped eyed when you said "the lower switch would turn on the first fan, and the higher temp switch would turn on the second fan!"

My bad.....I'm a special tjop.... 🙄

LOL - you clown!!!

sorry if i musunderstood you!

Here is mine, marked in the red. Riaan from Snail Conversions installed it and welded it into the metal housing. This is however the top pipe!?!? 😮

It's been working fine for 2 years and my temp gauge is always sitting at exactly half. No more, no less.

DDracomoderator23 May 2008, 12:15

It is not a train smash, what happens with yours now is only when the water out of your radiator to the inlet of the engine reach the certain digrees it switches on the fans, where if it was on the bottom pipe it would switch on earlier because of the hot water out of the engine.

If it is not to much of a hassle my opinion would be to shift the switch to the bottom to save you a few digrees, mine only reached about 3/4 to the halfway mark on a very hot day and in heavy traffic, normally it ran halfway between the 2nd line mark and halfway mark.

DDoctor G23 May 2008, 12:22

How did you guys mount it on the bottom pipe?

Did you use those universal ali pipe joints that can hold a temp sensor? Where can I get those btw?

DDracomoderator23 May 2008, 12:28

I measured the water pipe thickness down there....then I went to a radiator place, asked them to make me a size smaller copper pipe(to fit into the existing hose) about 200mm long with a place where you can screw in the temp switch(which you give them the size), then I cut a piece out of the existing pipe on the straightest piece just enough to fit the copper pipe and the clamped it in place with hose clamps.

From there I did the wiering....walla

vveecee23 May 2008, 21:30

i had mine in the same place as Dr G's.

remember i had an sandwich plate (25mm thick) engineered to fit in there, then i drilled and tapped holes for the sensors.

although i know its not ideal, it worked perfectly fine up to the day i sold the motor. water temp never went over halfway, ever. hot day or not!!!
