Exhaust Gaskets

CCalvin31 Jan 2012, 14:07

Hi guys,

I am having a problem with my s13. it seems as tho the exhaust gaskets have gone because the car makes a 'tappettie' noise when you rev the car. does anyone have have any other ideas as to what it may be, and where i can get the exhaust gaskets...

Thanks so much

Is it coming from the engine or turbo?

Sounds like someones knocking.

rratadmin31 Jan 2012, 14:31

Head to mani and turbo to mani are common problems. Cometic or Nissan for gaskets.

midas ca18de gaskets if the car is stock
between head and manufold

poizen sell copper gaskets

It isnt a knock, slight ticking sound. Thanks. I tried nissan, the gaskets for mani to head and mani to turbo are R500, will try midas and see there price. So you guys definately think its the gaskets?

Take a pipe like a vacuum pipe or summin and move one end around the turbo and mani and mani to head flanges while the other end you keep close to your ear(while car is started) you will hear without a doubt whether it is exhaust gasses leaking.

Will try that today.

Sounds like your manifold is leaking between the head and the exh manifold. This is mostl likely because its not true any more.

Take off your mani and let it be skimmed, then refit with new gaskets. Alert spares sells the Payen gaskets which works great.

This is what i did....

+1

I had those head-mani gaskets blow endless times, then I skimmed the maniford and havent had a problem again

Use the nissan gasket between turbo and manifold, the cheap thin ones blow out quickly. Did this job 2 weeks ago for someone btw crap job to take the mani out good luck

CCalvin01 Feb 2012, 08:41

Ok cool. do you suggest that i change the mani gaskets and the turbo one at the same time?

DDracomoderator01 Feb 2012, 08:54

Have you made sure it is the gasgets that blew? It would not be clever to fix something that you are not 100% sure is wrong.

CCalvin01 Feb 2012, 09:05

Ja. i put a pipe near the manifold and heard it blowing. its very difficult to determine where exactly its blowing tho. but i think its blowing from the head side....

GGrobblere01 Feb 2012, 09:50

Check if you can get the steel gasket which goes between the mani and turbo, they work 100%

CCalvin04 Feb 2012, 19:12

Howzit guys. I managed to get the job done today with the help of my dad. We took the manifold and turbo off at the same time. the exhaust was blowing between the manifold and the head. The manifold was also quite badly warped so we had to go to the workshop and skim it. Put new gaskets on, and now it is running well. Thanks for all the advise.

pull in tomorrow for the masons mill drifting bud

CCalvin07 Feb 2012, 19:10

When is the next masons mill drifting event?

dude, next time, best gasket for the Turbo to Zorst Mani, is a coke can ...... Cheap, brilliant and does not blow out...., Just make sure fascia's are skimmed... If you could get a coke can large enough to do the head to mani, I'd even use it there, but 2 of them together for there though.... Works brilliantly, just make sure it's a perfect cut fit sothat you dont have pieces burning off and going through your turbo on the inside.....

Copper is obviously best though and most reusable

This is in my opinion anyway....
