good word - relentless!!!

if only he could get his car back, then we could have 3 grey relentless sx's on the drift track!!!

good luck with whatever the noise is tobles - i really hope it comes right!

Thanks! Actually, after all the effort, I found the problem - the idler pulley was loose, and that was what was making all the racket! 😳 Anyway, since the engine is out, it gives us a chance to check the bearings. The sump was clean so I suspect the bearings will be A-OK.

GGary5707 Jun 2007, 13:12

Oh WOW what a job just to find out the idler pulley was gone 😮 . Anyway while its out give it a clean again, tighten up some bolts and clean engine bay.

vveecee07 Jun 2007, 13:32

nah - i dont think it would be a hectic job with vlade around!!!

and toby probably is quite handy at that stuff now too.

ah - the joys of learning to do this stuf for yourself!

toby - imagine how much that idler pulley investigation would have cost you if you had sent it to a mecchie!!!!

TTobyadmin07 Jun 2007, 13:40

Ya and nevermind all the additional problems I would be endowed with by said mecchie.

Yea Vlade is super fast with the engine removal! And 4 hands make light work. I reckon if the crane and mount were already assembled (I'd dismantled it and then had to reassemble it), and we'd removed ALL the bolts before trying to haul out the lump 😳 then it would've been done in about 45 minutes.

vveecee07 Jun 2007, 14:03

that beats my slow-ass record by many hours!!!

but then i like to take my time, talk crap, smoke a lot, talk crap some more, and then remove bolt number two.

and then the same before bolt 3!!!

LOL - well done!

VVladeadmin07 Jun 2007, 14:21

Yeah the engine would have been out in 45min if I didn't forget one bolt on the gearbox... My bad... can't blaim me for having half my normal 1/4 my normal sleep and a day of work behind me 😀

At least I got a good workout from violently shaking 300KG's, my arms was lekker stiff the next day

the idler pulley...

huh...whats that 😕

TTobyadmin07 Jun 2007, 19:53

It's one of two pulleys the timing belt goes around between the top (cam gears) and bottom (crank pulley). The one is the tensioner pulley (it's spring loaded) and the other is the idler pulley. You only see it once you take the covers off the front of the engine.

DDanielmoderator08 Jun 2007, 08:33

Oh ok thanx 😉 now i too know what its called

TTobyadmin14 Jun 2007, 07:59

So I hauled out the bearings to check them out and this is what they look like:

Any expert opinions on the condition of these bearings? I see some shiny bits on the main bearings, but on the conrod bearing, there's weird markings and scratches. Pic 1 and 3 are mains, the other two are conrods. All this after only 160km?

GGary5714 Jun 2007, 08:20

Oh shit, did you check the big end clearances matched the bearings??

VVladeadmin14 Jun 2007, 08:55

We don't have the tools to do it, we left it to the engineers, the crank was regrinded to 0.25

GGary5714 Jun 2007, 09:48

That looks like the crank is too small for the bearings. Did all of them look like that??

PS: a cheap and easy way of checking crank size to bearing size is to use those wax strips and then measure the width it flattens to.

VVladeadmin14 Jun 2007, 10:35

well we took off two from the conrods they both were the same...

those Wax strips, where do you get them?

GGary5714 Jun 2007, 10:36

Spares shop should have them.

vveecee14 Jun 2007, 10:42

i thought they were made of some sort of plastic, because my engineer calls them plastiguage or something like that!!!

but yeah, they put everything together with those strips in place, then disassemble it and measure the thickness of the gauge! thats what i've heard.

VVladeadmin14 Jun 2007, 10:45

thats the stuff... can't find it... spares shops didn't have, they never heard of it
