Lotus 7 bits and pieces wanted.

I know this isnt the correct forum but I want to build a Lotus 7/Locost 7. I am trying to source the body work, suspensions and maybe even Toyota drivetrain.

Does anyone know anyone with stuff like this and maybe know where I can get it??

Maybe you can put in one of those SR20 engines that are on sale in another thread... you know, to keep it ON TOPIC 😂

explore it and it may surprise you, or not???!!!

He just gets that link from me YESTERDAY and now he takes all the credit and tries to sound like an expert!

Anyways, I'm seriously considering building one too! Just need to convince the wife 😛

I have convinced everyone I need to, just need to source the parts. The rear diff and suspension I have, motor will probably be Toyota 4age not sure on the box yet.

I have been on the locost site thanks, just dont want to spend R5000 on a few pieces of fiber glass.

SSokar19 Sept 2007, 16:01

I was thinking of a 4age, Carbed with sidies, this keeps management simple so I wont need to take the car to anyone for completion except the custom driveshaft (Theoretically 😛 ).

I want to follow the "easy" build plan they have using ford parts as all the suspension parts are for ford uprights and calipers etc, but I'd like to use the toyota engine and gearbox as well as diff (I've heard that some Condors/Ventures came with LS units, ford only has open diffs.... 🙁 )

The prices arent bad I think, and join the locost forums on that site, you'll see how helpful the people are, there is a guy that said the R20k starter kit cost too much, he said he could do it himself for 10k, he's at 12k now and hasnt started on the fiberglass, just finished the frame....

Nice part is for the 20k you get a chassis with a SABS approval and a VIN Number, so registering is a breeze (dont quote me on that)

Where you getting your fame?

GGary5719 Sept 2007, 16:07

I want to go IRS from the sierra, nice and cheap and very common. The 4age motor is R4200 and the 20v is R3800 with throttle bodies (my sx would love the throttles).

My BIGGEST problem is the body panels, breaks my heart to pay R5000 for a few fibre glass pieces that prob only cost R400. Do you know anyone with a mould??

GGary5719 Sept 2007, 16:09

I will build the chassis will be a piece of piss man. Ill knock the chassis up in like a day. Wanna buy a chassis and help me fund the body parts 😂 ??

SSokar19 Sept 2007, 16:55

If you can get the chassis you make registered without a problem I might 😛 I havent got a clue what you need to get it registered 😛

GGary5719 Sept 2007, 21:04

to get the chassis reg is nothing!! got any connections with body part or moulds??

Nope, sorry, I'm just a simple IT guy 😛

What motor do you think would go well in a locost?? I want it to be carb/ side draught. I dont want electrics and shit that can go wrong.

vveecee20 Sept 2007, 12:00

motor = 13bt or 13btt rew.

GGary5720 Sept 2007, 12:09

Rotory motor are expensive arent they??

This is creepy, I feel EXACTLY the same way, ask VC I had this exact conversation with him on Monday!

I think the ONLY choice is 4age carbed 16v (for a start) Very simple, spares are a dime a dozen, they never break and the performance options are endless!

Also, once you have the 4age in and running and you feel you need more power (Eventually gonna happen) then you just drop in a 4agze with a turbo and arrange management 😛

13bt = R3500.00

13btt = R4500.00

quite cheap for many many easily revving kilowatts!

A rotary would also be very nice I love the light engine in a light chassis idea, dunno about turboing it though alot of the builds I've seen they leave it off, less complication.

GGary5720 Sept 2007, 12:14

But again with the rotory I am back to EMS and not carb.

I like the idea of a 4age motor with side draughts but the motor alone costs R4000. Yes that is cheap when you compare it to our sx motors but still too much. I think Ill hang in there till I can get a cheap one.
