S14 FMIC - The verdict

jjohansx03 Oct 2007, 08:29

So I collected my car from Mause yesterday....

Original S14 makes about 100 rwkw

Added Unichip and 3" exhasut - 119 rwkw R4500 +-

Added :
X-force stailess branches R3700
Z33 MAF R1200
Large throttle boddy R340
FMIC 3x the original size + piping R2400
90mm inlet ducting with venturi on turbo R700
gas flowed head R2000
New Unichip ( to fix stalling problem with old chip) R3000
Mause other extras R2700

Total R16 040-00

Ok, so how much power should this S14 produce, reliable, and conservative.

DDracomoderator03 Oct 2007, 08:35

I thaught it was less with what you did but I see now that you did some stuff extra....so thats my vote...

Freak....stop playing and give us the shit 😈

at what boost?

Considering the amount of money spend, that the tuner should tune for the max reliable power, and the max safe/maintainable boost.

Another poll? Previously ran for years reliably at .7bar. At 1 bar the turbo lasted 1 year, but it could only maintain .9bar at full throttle. So with the mods, can it maintain anything higher?

Sorry about keeping you in suspense, I want to prove a point 😮

Remember stock T28 turbo, std injectors.

PPhinx03 Oct 2007, 10:31

160 rwkw .... at 0.8 bar

180 Rwkw at 1 bar maybe I wouldn't run this high

jjon03 Oct 2007, 10:47

Wow, looks like you have a strong camry, congrats 😈

I second Phinx's guess, now stop toying with us and spill the beans or better yet post your dyno graph 😀

Normally when a turbo can't maintain flow on a stock engine it migth even be worse on a modified one, but it depends on other factors too, so it's not always the case.

That is now something learned.Thanks. We tend to forget about this type of detail. chem 8)

but like I said, many other factor does affect it, like a restrictive stock intercooler, exhaust system, boost pipes, etc.

The whole idea of this excercise was to remove restrictions, namely the AFM, throttle body and inlet piping. IC is 3 times bigger etc. So flow should be way better. Air box on the inlet and down pipe on the exhaust the only room for improvement.

So let me spill the beans. On top of the previous upgrade (xhaust+Unichip @ 119 rwkw) I spend a further 16 grand. I would expect the tuner, Maus in this case to try and get the max out of the car, with some reliability off course. Comments like "the Z33 MAF will make a huge difference etc. etc., one come to expect a nice rwkw upgrade. After seeing 2 cars at mr Calibrator with stock injectors nearing 200rwkw, I expected at least somewhere around 150 rwkw. The only comment to Maus was that the turbo does not want to run at 1 bar as Dastek previously set it.

So after lots of work fitting a new FMIC, making pipes etc., spending days hunting down Z33 MAF sensors and getting bigger throttle bodies, the total gain was a whopping 6 rwkw. The turbo boosts only .6 bar. Duh, what am I missing. Spending 16 grand and a lot of my personal time for 6rwkw, the total lack of enthusiasm at Maus does not impress me. Sorry Martin/Kobus, you lost a client! Yes I did not expect you to was my car because of the rain, but the oil paw prints all over the inside, the window that was left open for almost a month leaving a thick layer of dust all over, nobody bothered to even clean the car inside. The oil stains on the carpets are still there when previously you rebuild the engine and dumped the parts inside my otherwise very clean well looked after car...

Anyway, the only thing the new Unichip fixed was the stalling at robots.... but why did I have to buy a new Unichip if clearly the problem was with the previous Unichip. The stalling problem was reported when I originally had it installed....

So can somebody recommend a tuner somewhere around Pta that can tune Unichips and would like to make a loyal new customer in exchange for good service :?: Preferably somebody that has some SX experience.

Sorry about the long rant, at least I cooled off a lot since yesterday. 😉

TTobyadmin03 Oct 2007, 18:13

YAY! I was the only one who voted correctly 🙂

2200SX MP03 Oct 2007, 18:48

That actualy is not very good il let u dudes know wat my rwkw is as soon as get it back from atr in vanderbijl hopefully it is not as bad as youer gain 🙁 🙁 and ill be running at a bar boost and i have an s13 so watch this space 😛 😛 😛 😛

PPhinx03 Oct 2007, 19:16

I really don't think 200 rwkw on the stock injectors is impressive .

I personally think its called a "lean" condition.

There must be something up with your car Johansx.
Could the Autobox be eating the power?

Yip 200kw on stock is running the injectors at max, all the time. Difficult to tune accurately.

Autobox takes about 4kw. My point is that just the Unichip and the Xhaust at .7 bar made 19rwkw. They should at least have upped the boost from the .6 bar to .7 or even .8. If you look at Johan S14's car, which use to belong to one of the guys at Maus, that car made 155rwkw with exhaust, slightly bigger cooler and injectors with a Unichip. There is no way my injectors are working close to the limit at 125rwkw. In fact I am going to plug my laptop in and see exactly what is happening on the Consult. So, discounting all my other mods, I am missing 30rwkw because my injectors are smaller than Johan S14's car? PLEASE !!!

Any tuners out there ......... :?: :?: :?:

Think I will go see Smart Racing ... any comments anybody?

Now Johan, I am asking because we need to understand what happened. So may be I ask stupid questions.

1. Stock turbo - will it be capable and or able to push through your bigger IC? Can a IC be to big? 🙄
2. Stock turbo and bigger TB. For one momento I understand you want less restriction, but on the other side TB to big - cant fill the plennum properly.(This sounds stupid to me saying it myself 🙄 Can it be possible?
3. What is the base timing now? Was there any timing advance involved?
4. Who was operating the laptop while tuning? Francois?(He has done a great job with my unichip(latest version).

Just trying to understand what on earth happened with your car. I must say the turbo bothers me. 🙄

1. Sure it battles.... at .6 bar. Why did they not bother to increase the boost? If they where unsure, why not phone me? They did for everything else. The IC is not very big, the lag is very very little. Throttle response good. If the IC was to big and the turbo to small, the lag would have been huge, specially on a autobox.
2. Again, no lag. Yes it is ready for a BIG mother of a turbo now... but that turbo is capable of at least 155 rwkw like what they did on their own SX. On that 1 they simply added another IC about the same size as my new one in line with the existing std IC. So they ran the same turbo and a bigger cooler and made 155 rwkw?
3. Will check later when I connect the laptop to the Consult port. It used to be 15 deg.
4. Was not present at the time, but Francois soldered in the Unichip and MAF, but is seems that Martin was involved as well at least with the test drive.

Sure I am also confused about all of this. Specially if I was assured before hand that these upgrade would make a HUGE difference... 6 rwkw. 😮

jjon04 Oct 2007, 08:09

Sorry to hear that Johan. The only guy that I can recommend is just down the road from me, Ross at RBTS Racing - 0119794428, however this is in Bredell by JHB Int Airport. I did phone Smart once with some questions and got a lot of attitude from them, the previous owner Hannes Minaar gets 5 stars from me for his level of service, he lives in PTA West, rather phone him - 0848006801

Good luck, I hope you come right.

DDracomoderator04 Oct 2007, 08:27

Oi Jahan...what a bommer....

Ok, this is presisely why I did not want to go back to maus.... 🙄

Hannes does not work at Smart racing anymore....in anyway he did not do the tuning, he does the building and he is very good, his brother Johan does the dina, he is also good, he did my car and although I got the same results as before(on a different dina) my petrol use seems to be much better, I was there the whole time he did it and it was a good job, I was impressed with his friendlyness and advice, he never made me feel unwelcome or that I am wasting his time...as was the case at maus.

Johan I don't know if you will do better numbers at Johan, although I can't see why not, but I know you will get better service.

PPhinx04 Oct 2007, 08:55

Im sorry guys but this is why I don't trust tuners as far as I can throw them .

The S-14 Black-Top has one of the best turbo's in the Nissan's range , I have been trying to get my hands on one for some time but money is the issue.

The turbo is Very, Very close to the flow rates and power outputs of a GT28R, just without the ball-bearing cart.

You will be able to easily push 150Rwkw on that turbo without much work. I'm also not a fan on Uni-chips, piggyback , xms what ever. There is a possibility this could also be your issue maybe a bikiROM is a better route but I don't think this is your issue.

But lets cover the basics before another tuner touch's your car again.
Hows the Compression on you motor?
How do the plugs look?
Base timing?
Could there be a boost leak?
Could the stock BOV be leaking?
Any shaft play on the turbo?

I'm sure Sokar's old S-14 put out more power with just an exhaust.
So there must be something up somewhere.
