Tappity noise on startup

HHype26 Nov 2007, 10:12

Howdy all

My friends car makes a tappity noise on startup, does it for about 20seconds then goes away.
He has been told its oil not getting to the tappits quick enough.

Is this true? What could be the causes of thise? Is it an easy fix?

GGary5726 Nov 2007, 10:20

Are you sure it is noisy tappets or piston slap??

VVladeadmin26 Nov 2007, 10:26

check your oil level... my Polo does that when oil level is low....

Otherwize it can be that your oil is very thick when its cold... maybe using wrong Weight.

Sounds about right, check the past threads for the "Oil" thread.

Sounds like lifters...

Replacing lifters is also like 1.5 hours work.

They do get sticky after a while.

What car?

HHype26 Nov 2007, 10:37

Thanks for the replies

Its an S14 SR20DET
Using Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic in the engine

How much is one looking at to replace the lifters?

SSpeed breeder26 Nov 2007, 10:59

Little bit more time for car with chain and DOHC. Look at between R30-R45 a lifter...

I must admit I haven't ever priced a SR20DET's lifters...

Thank you 🙂

Also a note, the SR only has 8 lifters total, 4 per side.

RRiekertadmin26 Nov 2007, 15:19

My dads SR also makes that tapping sound.

Its not a SX but is still goes for a fwd 2l 😀 😀

Sure its not the std VVT rattle ? Higher mileage black tops does that.

SR20DET lifters are around...

wait for it...

R550 PER lifter! Yes, I kid you not. Jarred spent about 6 months to a year trying to source cheap lifters for his S14 - the cheapest were R550 per lifter. However, Nismo200sx managed to source some a little bit cheaper.

Iwont replace them if they are noisy at start up coes when the car stands over night all the oil gets out of the lifters and when u start it they are noisy but if they keep on making noise then i will sugest replacing them 🙄

Snail did mine for R80 per lifter, and that was with his extra cost added....

The oil is not supposed to drain completely from the system. Some OEM filter have a non-return valve to stop just that. Not sure on the SR and the CA. Maybe I should buy a OEM filter again... 😉

I flushed my SR engine over the weekend to get rid of the crap oil that Maus must have used to top up after the turbo drain pipe broke off. Id did not mix well with the synthetic oil. Made thick blobs (not quite sure how to describe it) and it was a mess to clean by hand. 4L diesel and idle for 1 minute and it is all clean and flushed. Even after a couple hundred km the oil is still clean.

Thanks for all the replies!

Maybe an oil flush will help the problem 🙂
If it doesnt go away and starts getting worse then i think a check up is in order. 🙂

i dont think an oil flush will work. i think new lifters will work. if they're bled properly. otherwise those wont work either!
