To Dastek or not to Dastek?

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 07:05

Hi there fellas

I know that Draco advised me to go to Maus for dyno tuning, but i work in Boksburg and live in PTA so time is a luxary. Dastek opposite Waterkloof AFB is on my way home so it would be convenient for me to take it there. I would just like to know how you guys feel about there work seeing that im new at this sh*t.

Um....ask Johansx....the reply to you question is rather not.....to justify your answer, phone them and ask them if they know a 200sx....they did Johans car, they had the car for more than a week to fir a aftermarket manifold and dina it, the turbo was not bolted properly Johan had to do it himself, was leaking, they could not give him printouts of the dina or what the result was.....

Also remember, you are going to need a day to do this at maus...because you have to wait for a while, rather make an appointment and leave the car there...

My car also went there
funny I had the same issue manifolod to turbo bolts came loose after a few km's

Not bad people they just not used to working on sx's

hope this helps

I was quoted 2800 for unichip and tune, aperently my standard pump and FPR will work up to 0.9bar?

DDracomoderator16 Jan 2008, 09:42

That is about the going rate, as for the pump it is advised to upgrade, the standerd pump is known to fail with minor upgrades and standard sometimes, as for the FPR, there is a small trick to increase FP but again it is the better root to have a aftermarket relieble FPR.

Just for the record, I have "tricked" mine and I boosted 1.4 at a stage and then back to 1.2 and 1 and now 0.9 and it still workes fine, as I say if it is possible for you do it right from the start with the right bits.

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 09:51

Does the aftermarket pump goes into the feul tank aswell?

DDracomoderator16 Jan 2008, 09:58

Yes it does, you need to ask for an in tank fuel pump and in some cases you need to mod a bit to fasten the pump to the unit because depending on what pump you buy the size may differ and so forth. The best is to take the origenal with to get as close to that as possible.

I haven't heard many positive reports about Dastek, where there's smoke there's usually fire. Rather go standalone, more expensive but far more room to grow.

Edit: The above sounds quite harsh and i have no personal experience with Dastek, just saying you should do your homework.

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 10:39

Are there any places in Boksburg cause that might work bettter for me?

GGary5716 Jan 2008, 11:18

I have a Unichip if you want 😈 .

mmario_200sx16 Jan 2008, 11:25

Gary - What will be the difference wid the unichip??? Performance and so on?

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 11:48

How much would you like for it Gary?

GGary5716 Jan 2008, 12:01

When I fitted it the performance shot up, it really helped aid the other mods I had (FMIC, cone filter and 76mm exhaust). Fuel consup[tion went up slightly but that is because you floor it more.

Make me an offer.

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 12:18

Boet, ive got no idea what thy go for so i dont want to insult you by offering to little. Why did you take it out and what are you running now, wich does what.

GGary5716 Jan 2008, 12:24

I took it out when I fitted the Wolf3D system.

Hows R1000 sound??

PPhinx16 Jan 2008, 13:32

I have never liked piggybacks and there is just something about fooling the ECU that doesn’t sit well with me.

I have a number of "illegal racing buddies" that have had an array of chips fitted to different cars and most sing the same song.
Once the buzz has worn off they start picking up problems like cold start issues, problems with idle when it’s hot outside or cold, Weird fueling issues and that’s the minor list

Some have more apparent serious issues, Like cutting out at higher RPM, fuel usage, intermittent problems.

I would go for a complete stand alone unit, but unless you’re looking to just be fancy or to go modification and HP crazy the stock ECU socketed could work for your needs.

I pushed 190 Whp or 140 Rwkw on a stock ECU so I think the unit can take a few modifications

Just my 10 c Zim

Sorry Gary not trying to make you lose a sale or anything like that.

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 13:41

So Phinx who does the tuning on your sx?

GGary5716 Jan 2008, 13:59

Phinx no stress about the sale. I think "chips" dont sit well with you because you have been misinformed or have heard stories about kak Unichips when the kak part is actually the tuner.

There is nothing wrong with "fooling" the ECU, this is not a black art or something to be frowned apon, there are many exotic cars (Ferrari's, Porche", etc) that are "chipped" in order to fool the "ECU". My SX drove 100% with the Unichip without 1 hickup. If you are not going to spend R8000 on a EMS then "chipping" is your best bet. This way you retain the factory knock sensing, cold start compensations (this works as a % of the main map so if it is tuned kak it will start kak), etc. What you are doing by fitting a "chip" is making a programmable ECU out of a factory one, which is the same thing as a standalone. You fit a standalone system so you can alter the fuel and ignition that is exactly what a "chip" alows you to do.

I think what you need to find is a guy that can tune your car, someone that understands the finer details of a IC engine and not some poophole who thinks he can tune.

Phinx this is not an attack at you or your thought but merely my oppinion.

CCharlvdw16 Jan 2008, 14:08

Gary im considiring your price seriosly, i just have to way up things like the garantee and the attitude of the tuner if i dont buy the product from him(him profitting less). O and then getting the thing here, dont think you do door to door.

GGary5716 Jan 2008, 14:13

What you should do is install it yourself, it is connected to the stock wiring plug so you can do it your self. Drive the car to him and ask for a tune. That way he wont have any idea of how long you have had it for so there wont be any change is his attitude.

I will send it via Post Office, counter-counter or counter-door.
