oil - your choice

Hi Guys...

Just wondering what oils everyone is using...

I ahve so far used the Edge 10W60, worked well for about a month, then lifters got noisy again, tried a mobil - that not having a great effect either, I'm just wondering if I should try the mobil 1.

Also, I've heard people say that the SHell Rotella diesel oil is good to use in Turbo'ed cars, just needs to be changed more regularly - any truth in this ? anybody here doing this ?

Thanks Guys.

Maybe your lifters are just gone.

I use Castrol SLX, it used to be call TXT Softec.

PS: what ever happened to the CA18DET that you were selling??

VVladeadmin28 Feb 2008, 09:30

I believe in a slightly thicker oil... the water thin stuff tend to leak and make lifters noisy... I use Castrol Edge (Non Sport) got Sport in now, because they were out of stock for the Non-Sport, was much happier with plain Castrol Edge...

Lost a turbo twice because of Castrol Magnatec

I am using 0w-40 now but you also get it in 5w-30.

@Gary which one is going in my car?

GGary5728 Feb 2008, 11:56

0w - 40

rratadmin28 Feb 2008, 13:59

isnt that a bit thin, just worryed about the heat. if it is too hot and gets too thin will lose oil pressure?

just a question, am not very technical

the bible says 20w40 / 20w50

GGary5728 Feb 2008, 14:02

Well you choose, I am running 0w-40 without a problem.

rratadmin28 Feb 2008, 14:15

ok go with the 0w-40 then.

thx

Mobil 1 !

0w40 a bit thin for the turbo'd cars I think.

But they do make a 15w50 mobil 1. I buy them in 1L bottles at certain engen garages.

GGary5729 Feb 2008, 08:07

SLX 0w-40 is used in all the BMW petrol and diesel motors including the 335i twin turbo petrol.

VVladeadmin29 Feb 2008, 09:44

BMW 335 designed and manufactured in the last couple of years -3 or so...
Your CA18DET -20 years ago...

If your oil seals seated for thick oil they will leak with thin oil

mmario_200sx29 Feb 2008, 09:48

I must agree with valde, the 200sx needs a slightly thicker oil. Dont go too thin, ur just looking for trouble!

maybe that then?

GGary5729 Feb 2008, 10:35

Well my car is running perfectly on SLX so not going to change it. I have no oil leaks nor do I use oil.

maybe thats why nothing leaks out then...

but i've heard that not using oil in your engine is bad!

GGary5729 Feb 2008, 10:53

HAHA good one VC.

rratadmin29 Feb 2008, 11:43

@ Gary - ok if you can use a bit thicker oil for my car, if your dad has already done it then dont worry. Sorry for hi jacking thread.
@VC - Lol

VVladeadmin29 Feb 2008, 11:51

guess you are just lucky... 😀

mine started leaking when I changed from mineral 20W-50 to 10w-40 synthetic after my run in, so has Freddy's and Toby's...

DDracomoderator03 Mar 2008, 08:51

I guess I was lucky, the only thing that leaked oil was my tappet cover because it always kept on coming loose a bit....it still does...
