Repairing CA18DET starter

DDoctor G12 Mar 2008, 09:39

Who has done this before??

Should I attempt it or just take the fcuker to an Auto Electrician?

vveecee12 Mar 2008, 09:47

i would send it in.

but then i would also try to take it apart first!

i like to take these things apart!

just take lots of photos!

DDracomoderator12 Mar 2008, 10:23

Chemcool did before and 200sxMP also sent his in....as for the details....don't know

DDanielmoderator12 Mar 2008, 10:36

whats wrong with it exactly. I just took mine apart and did it myself.
The SX being my only car doesnt give me a choice to take anything in and wait for them.
I went to a local parts shop with samples in hand and got everything i needed. cost me 40 bucks i think

vveecee12 Mar 2008, 10:43

so then...

where are the pics and the write-up for the articles section????

DDoctor G12 Mar 2008, 10:56

Selonoid kicks and then it turns VERY slowly. Not enought to turn the flywheel.

VC gave me a spare but it also kicks, but she no turns...

vveecee12 Mar 2008, 10:58

are you sure there is enough power in the battery???

i've had this happen when battery is flattish!

DDanielmoderator12 Mar 2008, 11:00

Sounds like just brushes to me. I ended up with some bosch brushes that i had to file down to fit...worked a charm

Jaja VC, i did that b4 the days of the forum. Took me 2 1/2 hours to get the starter off 😳 and 5 min to put it back

vveecee12 Mar 2008, 11:30

LOL - did you run to the spares shop or did you push start the car?

DDoctor G12 Mar 2008, 12:03

Yeah tried it on another cars battery too Vaughn.

Cool Daniel. I'm gonna strip it and go to the spare shops to get new "brushes". PS: What do brushes look like?

And do you just replace these little parts or is there any soldering and stuff involved?

vveecee12 Mar 2008, 12:13

brushes are little cubes of carbon usually!!!

normally quite easy to replace. they'll have a slot to fit into, or some sort of mechanism to hold them in place.

they create the contact between the spinning part of the motor, and the electrics. so they are a wear and tear item, and occasionally need replacing!

its also the reason you cant use electrical tools when working with carbon fibre! the carbon dust gets in everywhere and stuffs up the eletronics!

0007zhr12 Mar 2008, 12:32

don't these brushes have to be soldered to something as well...

DDanielmoderator12 Mar 2008, 12:33

yeah they need to be soldiered. not a big deal really

CChemCooladmin12 Mar 2008, 15:10

so then...

where are the pics and the write-up for the articles section????

heheheheh, got you again. See my project F under articles. Piccies galore on my starter overhaul..

Chem 8)

vveecee13 Mar 2008, 14:46

you see G...

go to project F!

DDoctor G13 Mar 2008, 15:07

Project F had one pic of the starter in pieces.

I was a noob on this yesterday so need detailed "this is the bushes, this is the brushes, this is the core" type info.

But I managed to replace the brushes on my starter yesterday. Still spun FARKEN slowly. So I popped in at the Auto Elect this morning.

He tests it and it spins like it wants to take off. Turns out I was connecting the negative on the wrong spot when I did my "after" test.

So starter is fine now. Just need to refit and charge the battery. (Damn 2 month ES bushes job made my battery flat)

CChemCooladmin13 Mar 2008, 15:13

So, who is the culprit? Who has deleted my piccies?
Just joking, sorry.

Chem 😂

vveecee13 Mar 2008, 15:22
