Misfire/Sputter on boost

VVoodooMaster08 Apr 2008, 22:11

A buddy of mine seems to be having a problem with his S13 (Standard CA18DET). The problem is that the car is misfiring badly when the boost comes in.
We have cleaned the airflow meter, check the turbo, plugs (BCPR6ES) + coil packs and everything seems fine.

Does anyone know what else we could check before starting to replace parts 1 by 1?

I can't really help you much, but i did have a problem with my sx where it would misfire badly when it got into the higher rev range. The problem turned out to be an injector plug was shaking itself loose at high rpm. It was missing the metal clip that hold the injector plug in place. Its worth checking...

Even if you have checked the plugs, I recommend replacing them. Cheapest thing to replace anyway.

Now a days, I feel there is no short cuts, start to eliminate even further.

Not enough fuel when coming in to boost? just an idea i am not very technical so someone correct me if i am wrong

DDracomoderator09 Apr 2008, 08:23

Mine did that when I got my car....fuel pump

rratadmin09 Apr 2008, 08:26

The std pumps are 17 yrs old, both of mine have lost most of there pressure.

Check your fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator. Also get your injectors flow tested if the problem persists.

check the gap between the coil electrode, and the sparkplug electrode.

there is supposed to be a spring, or a carbon bit on a spring, it may not be making proper contact with the spark plug electrode!

sounds like a coil pack or two is on its death bed

or what about the AFM ?

Replace the Fuel filter and spark plugs. If problem persists check fuel pressure.

Other wise try using BCPR7ES.

heheheheheehehehehehe..... or replace the CAS???

Tell me when you dudes need the manual.

But in a way, basically all these dudes tell you to eliminate. They just do it in a very slow manner and the trend of this thread boils down to elimination.

Hi All
Thanks for the input guys. Where does this pump sit? And is it available for purchase from local spares or even agent.
Coil packs are fine, no cracks and I checked the springs, all intact. The cars was just serviced before the problem started. So the plugs are reletively new.
The car does not misfire on normal driving but only on full throttle. I also supect fuelling so we'll need to check everything fuel related.

All ideas welcome guys.

Just an idea....before you take out the pump( sits in the fuel tank) make your spark plug gaps smaller.....to about 0.6 or 0.8, just check if that does not solve the problem, many times if the gap is to big the boost blow the spark away.....this together with my fuel pump solved my problem.

the word splutter does utter fueling...
If you need one, buy aftermarket pump... take your old one along and match up to a suitable replacement - performance places will have plenty to choose from... I think they start from R500 for a 3-5 bar pump.

I have the same problem with my car now. But the misfire only happens under boost and in first and second gear!!!! This is really starting to irritate me… 😈 Problem only started when I fitted the water/meth injection, so I thought it was that so I disconnected it and the problem is still there. I have a new fuel pump, FPR, new plugs at 0.8 gap, the coils seem fine. Only thing is that I don’t know the condition of my injectors, but I still find it strange how it only does it in 1st and 2nd gear πŸ˜• πŸ˜•
