ABS Unit

RRiekertadmin19 Jun 2008, 10:07

Hey guys... my abs unit is making a funny noise... like a grrrrr sound. 😢

Checked the brake fluid level and that's still fine... So I'm gonna bleed the brakes because there might be an air bubble in the system(thanx Q). šŸ˜‰

But any other suggestions will be appreciated... šŸ˜€

does your abs light on the dash stay on?

if so, could be a abs-ecu fault.. there is a way to read the fault codes off the abs controller i think (mine has failed before) šŸ˜•

my light stays on sometimes, have to turn off then on a few times then comes right?

yeah sorry forgot to mention that the ABS (Anti-lock) light on the dash stays on. I had to remove the positive off the battery last nite cause it would not stop even after i turned the ignition off.

Tried that a few times while driving home last nite... no change...

ouch.. not lekker

if that light on the dash stays on, it can only be electric.. either a wiring fault has occured somewhere, some of the support hardware (sensor ect.)
has failed, or the ecu(abs) itself has failed.. in my case it was the ecu itself that had failed. replacing it cured the problem

Its probably just the relay acting up, when u hear the noise pop the bonnet and listen around the ABS unit, i think theres 2 relays in that black box. Then just hit it, it should stop.

I do remember finding a replacement relay a few years back, but after banging it iv'e never had the problem again and subsequently forgot the part No.

Well now that's lovely!! (in the most sarcastic way i can type it!)

F*#K that kinda sux.... crap! ok I'll just have to check whats going on over the weekend!

if tapping the relay dont work, time to checkum them error codes..

the abs-ecu is located behind the driver , above the wheelwell.. take the rear side finisher off, after driving at least a minute over 30km/h, keep engine on and running.

count the flashes

error codes are in the handbook šŸ˜‰

good luck!

hopefully its that and not the alternative...

this sounds like a relay.. šŸ˜•

I know the Mercs have a probe on the caliper and if not connected well the abs light comes on. Maybe thats something to look into...

Usually its those stupid little things that you struggle your ass off to fix and its so small and infront of you that you keep on missing them.

wwidowmaker19 Jun 2008, 11:41

talking out me arse here, but maybe the sensor on the wheel is clogged?

i dont really believe myself here, but just chucking in things to check

HHancoB19 Jun 2008, 11:50

That can very much be widow...you are a wise arse...sorry have a wise arse! šŸ˜‰

i have had 3 sx's and they have all done it, so i just thought it was "one of those things" šŸ˜•

Will do man.

Speaking out of arse I do... but think we don't have one of those.... do we?

RRiekertadmin19 Jun 2008, 14:45

Ok... went home in my lunch hour.... started the car... grrrrrr noise. turned of, tapped little relays, started car... noise gone... so just holding thumbs that it's ok now...

is the light off???

cos the dash light could be one of a few things, the first being the ABS fuse. i cant believe noone has mentioned it. although if it is your ABS unit making a noise then i assume it has some power going to it.

the next from hanco would be the place to check. make sure that the plugs for the sensors are all connected correctly. you will find a sensor at each hub, and one on the diff. the hub sensor plugs are inside the engine bay, near the chassis rails - follow the wires to find them. the diff one - i cant remember!

then comes widows idea - although i'm not sure this will cause the dash light to stay on, but it might cause the unit to constantly open and close its valves. those are magnetic sensors and they pick up lost of metal filings and shavings - specially from the hub area!!! if they get too clogged they may send faulty readings to the abs ecu and that could make it repeatedly open and close valves.

there is also the supermegajuntion (or whatever the fukc its called). in the footwell of the drivers side is a massive square connector. it basically joins the ECU the ABS ECU and the wiring harnesses from the engine bay and the car. if there is a faulty connection there it can cause these problems - its happened to me before. make sure its well connected, and free of moisture!

then comes 300's suggestion. the ABS ECU - its located in the B-pillar on the drivers side. you would have to remove the plastic panels covering the seatbelt. the FSM has a list of the error codes and the way to test it.

man - seems complicated!

man - seems complicated!

yeah.. tracing abs faults is alot of fun šŸ˜‚

maybe you were lucky with the relay thing? holding thumbs for your sake..
