Powerbrake problem

TTrance10108 Jul 2008, 13:46

Hey guys,

I got the pro street kit from power brake to replace my disks and pads but I've run into a bit of a problem. The torque member won't fit over the new disks... The new disks are 280mm and the ones that I took off I mesured to be 258mm.

I'm know many people have done this upgrade so what gives?

vveecee08 Jul 2008, 13:51

yours is an import model right???

most SA model sx's were the same as the european models and therefore had 280mm discs.

some models were sold in other countries with smaller front discs! these were usually the auto or non-turbo models though!

so its possible.

hahahahahaha - you said torque member!!!

also - what is a torque member? šŸ˜‚ šŸ˜‚

DDracomoderator08 Jul 2008, 13:54

Post a pic of the problem, I did mine myself and I had no problem, it should fit on any model....

Ya um...what is a "torque member"
šŸ™„ šŸ™„

TTrance10108 Jul 2008, 14:01

Torque member is the bit the hold the rest of the caliper in place. Thats what its called according to the FSM. I'l post a pic in a few mins.

EEro_sennin08 Jul 2008, 14:04

I did mine myself as well, had no problems with the fitment, except my own stupidity for something, and I'm not exactly a mechanic.

Take some photo's if you can!

and please don't start speaking about how much torque your member has, some people might get offended.

vveecee08 Jul 2008, 14:10

ya - you definitely got the "small brakes" model then!!!

sorry bud - you may have to modifiy something or get different calipers to make it work!

EEro_sennin08 Jul 2008, 14:13

u need too take off the calliper, which hopefully you have done šŸ˜‰

make sure you push back the piston on the calliper before putting in the pads.

If you have done this I might be miss understanding you, so post pics!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Or like vasectomy said, you might have small brake syndrome.

Here are the pics of the problem:

ya so it seems it the small brake syndrome ... šŸ™

So does anybody know what is different with an sx thaqt suffer from small brakes? Are the brackets that the caliper mounts to different or is the caliper different? What would the best way be to get these to work....

SSokar08 Jul 2008, 14:39

damn those stock ones are tiny!

You might need the calipers of the 280mm model...or some custom spacers made.

GGary5708 Jul 2008, 14:43

I have calipers with pads if you want.

EEnzio08 Jul 2008, 14:44

Your haste may have cost you a bit here....

My SX also has the smaller discs - the mountings on the hub are the same but the calipers differ between the 260 and 280mm discs.

The powerbrake kit for 280mm is about R3k and for 260mm about R2500.

So the solution is as follows:
If you've got the cash start looking for the bigger calipers, alternatively find out from powerbrake if you can swop the kit....

If all else fails rip out the angle grinder and switch your torque member into high gear.... šŸ˜‚

That just means you gonna rip him off then steal his car!!!

*ducks*

Lol, Its cool, you posted first, you get the sale anyways!

Anyone else with 256mm that want a set of 280mm discs, callipers and pads as a small upgrade?

Well at this point I'l go for what ever I can get for the least amount of money. I've already spent 3 grand on these brakes 😳

I'm gonna go compare the calipers at gary's place this afternoon and I'l see what the difference is.

EEro_sennin08 Jul 2008, 15:03

yea think your best bet is to change the callipers.

Those power brakes are really good discs, I have the same ones. Did you buy the pads as well?

Is really a humongous difference from the stock brakes!

TTrance10108 Jul 2008, 20:06

Ok, so I went to go and compare calipers at Gary's and we found them to be different.

You can see the "torque member" thing is bigger on the caliper on the right. There doesn't seem to be much else different.

If the power brakes make such a big difference compared to the 280mm stock brakes them it should be a massive difference of me now that I'm used the the tiny 260mm brakes šŸ˜›

I bought those calipers off gary so I'm all sorted now. Will try fit them 2moro.

Yup, they have for the front.
Have had the discs for a while now on my S13

"Discs and pads kit", recommend getting the pads in conjunction with the discs.
They have really good service as well!
