Engine choice

Hi guys

Been following alot of the projects posted by members and I want to launch my own. Need some advice on where to start with the choice of engine. Have to consider price, power, reliability and mods required. I'm thinking of either the SR20DET or RB25DET or 2JZ-GTE (like RBSX is doing 😉 ). Considering all the the above, which will deliver more boost for the buck?

My first thought was that the SR20 will need more mods to get to the 6 cylinder engines power range. With the SR20 motor + mods I could get the either of the other 2 engines maybe even the gearbox too. My dilemma is that I won't feel too bad if I had to break an SR20, cos the repair bill won't be as much.

In terms of power, I'm looking at 250-280kW. Any suggestions on how to start 🙁

I'd go for SR, you'll be able to make that kind of power with a bit of work

Stock RB 25 will get that with basic mods

but the nose will be a shit load heavier... won't it?

RB25... To buy a RB25 or SR20 cost about the same, With RB25 you need a exh manifold, T61 or T66 Turbo and 50mm Ext wastegate. Can make easy 250kw + on std injectors (can do about 370hp) and normal feul. Only drawback is the extra work to install the RB.

Yes will be

its a bit kak on stock suspension, but can easily be sorted with some suspension mods!

Whoa 😮 theres alot of mixed thoughts bout the engines.

RRiekertadmin11 Aug 2008, 13:07

Well each to his own I suppose...

But in my opinion I'd go for the SR for a dailydrive and fun car. Dragracing and pure racing the rb25 or 26??

but ja.

Suppose thats the most important point. dont really wana have, I will be using the car driving around n ow and then. SR it is then :200sx_rockon:

Hey they aren't that bad.

A RB25DET will give you 5.

i think the most important thing to ask yourself is....
how are you going to stop with all that power? how you going to turn?
& what sound you like better, 4cyl or straight 6 cyl.
the first two aspects is most important!

more like How fast do you want to go through the gates? and forwards or backwards on fire?

Engine choice is a tricky one. So the pro's and cons in my opinion
SR
Pro's + con's:
Lighter than the RB and less mods to put in vs the RB
Easy to get 200+ kw, How ever 250+kw Needs work! (like injectors, fuel pump, intercooler and exhaust)
No big change on suspension required.
Change gear box, wiring harness and ecu.

RB 25:
Heavy, so big suspension mods, lots of fabrication to fit in the engine bay
Easy to make 250+kw
Also gearbox, ecu and harness replacement.

RB 20:
Heavy, Lots of mods to make 250+kw, Lots of work to get it to fit in the engine bay.
Big suspension mods
Also change Gearbox, wiring harness and ecu

Please NOTE My advice is that if you are looking to make that much power, Suspension, brakes and any form of chassis strengthening is a must. Now Im not saying fit a roll cage, but things like strut braces etc are a must!

Just My 10c worth
and good luck!

I love 6 cylinders, my ex ZX sounded like war coming down the road. but wouldn't want a very heavy car. the brakes are already sorted. got EBC green stuff with grooved and drilled discs, would love for the car to be a good all-rounder. only thing I hated bout the ZX that it weighed close to 2 tons 😂
