Air con faulty ?

I suppose its run out of gas. I've never actually used it, but the point is i could if i wanted too. But now if i press the AC button the green light doesnt even come on. and it definately doesnt get any colder.
any ideas ๐Ÿ˜•

Edit: run out of gas probably due to a leak.

If your AC has run out of gas it has a leak. The gas is only recycled so never gets used up.

DDanielmoderator17 Jan 2007, 16:30

My main concern is the AC not going on.

whether theres gas or not i dont know. but it used to come on, now it doesnt

Might have a leak, but because the light not coming on, is something else.
Check the wiring on the aircon unit itself...maybe somethings come loose.

The aircon wont come on if there is no gas.
It has a low pressure and a high pressure switch to prevent the pressure gettuing to high and also to prevent the compressor running without gas which has a special oil dissolved in it to lubricate the compressor.

TTobyadmin17 Jan 2007, 19:17

Yup, get it regassed before you do anything! If you run the compressor without enough gas (and hence lubricant) it can sieze up and you will need a new compressor.

My air-con went recently - the light would come one, but there would be no cold air. Turns out the thermostat or something was gone (it sits behind the glove box somewhere). Nissan would've charged R2500 or so for a new one, but Bosch replaced it with one of theirs for about R250. They seem pretty handy with air-cons so if you're not gonna do it yourself, I recommend taking it there.

Thanks guys ๐Ÿ˜€ Il get it gassed up then see how it goes from there.

GGary5718 Jan 2007, 10:04

No point in getting it gassed if there is a leak ๐Ÿ˜•

GRRR 456! I dont know if i have a leak! or if there is any gas@! Id have to get that checked!

besides i accidently let a whole lot out when the spanner jammed between the valve while i was putting the turbo back

CCharl18 Jan 2007, 12:30

I'm about to take my engine out. is there I valve to depresurise the system or something I have to do befor I can take the aircon pipes off?

TTobyadmin18 Jan 2007, 12:38

I suggest not taking the aircon pipes off - I left mine intact. There isn't a need to remove it.

CCharl18 Jan 2007, 13:39

did u take the compressor off the engine then?
I'm being daft hey ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey Toby where can i find these Bosh people, coz my aircon works lekker only when the weather is cool eg. at night or early in the mornigs but 12:00PM when i really need it throws me the middle finger ๐Ÿ˜ˆ .
And airncon light sometimes goes off, someone told me is a safetty feature 4 when the aircon thermostat reaches high temps (builds pressure ๐Ÿ™„ ) it switches the compressor off so it doesn't blow me tp pieces ๐Ÿ˜ฎ .

And it stays off for while and eventually whem i'm neer home the fuck$#@er comes on again ๐Ÿ˜ฎ .

Use the aircon guys next to the road if you want to buy a new compressor.
Most of them dont have a proper evacuating station which is needed to purge the system and build up a vacuum to suck the new gas in.

They use the comnpressor to "suck" the gas in. Except its not a gas at that point its a liquid.
Now if you paid attention in science you would know that liquids are incompressible ,so what do you think happens when your COMPRESSOR tries to compress that liquid?

If you go to a proper aircon guy he will pick up a serious leak before he even attempts to gas the system as it wont pull a proper vacuum.

If you let a shit load of gas out by accident that will explain why your aircon does'nt work.

Bruno there are a few failsafes in aircon systems
1: Thermostat prevents the system freezing.
2: Low pressure switch prevents the compressor running without gas
3: High pressure switch prevents the system from exceeding the pre set pressure.
4: Rupture disc this is a fitting on the reciever/dryer which literally ruptures if the pressure exceeds the maximum safe pressure.

Once again, I recommend Bosch - they are euipped with UV gas-leak-detecting-technology ๐Ÿ™‚ This is one of their specialities. They can be found everywhere:

http://www.fixmycar.co.za/regionselection.php

I don't know if they are the cheapest or not, however when I first took my car there for the aircon, they did something and gave me back the car and didn't charge me. The aircon worked for a short time, then didn't, os I took it back and they had a closer look and found the thermostat problem.

Thanks Calibrator for the info, i'll try and see a specialist this weekend.

Thanks Toby for the site i'll check and see if they have one close to me. ๐Ÿ˜€
