FrieKen GasKets

AARRGGHHHH!!!
You won't believe this. Exactly a year ago I replaced the turbo & manifold gaskets, & this weekend I heard a strange blowing sound, only to find out that the bolts around the turbo & exhaust manifold are all loose.
This is a job I hate. I have done it once on this car & about three times on my previous SX. I also don't have time to work on the car during the week, so I probably need to send it in somewhere.

Can anybody recommend a good place here in randburg. Is the calibrator in this area & how much will he charge?

Also, should I use the same gaskets from Nissan or get something else.
AARRGGHH. this is the only problem on an SX that frieken haunts me.

Having just taken off the turbo again myself it isnt so bad. Although il say it again, my mate has a 'pit' at his house, makes life so much easier!
and i really do hate doing it so i know where your coming from

the nuts of the manifold seem to come loose on mine aswell. how the F do you get them to stay on?

VVladeadmin12 Feb 2007, 09:52

Yip Calibrator is in Randburg....

You must use Copper nuts on the manifold housing otherwise they will come loose... some people even double nut them where possible.

I've got the manifold gaskets for u. I got them with the payen gasket set. I'm shure vlade will agree these will do just fine for a standard setup like yours. I'll give them to you, for a small fee šŸ™„ I'm using double steel face ceramic ones

CChemCooladmin12 Feb 2007, 10:31

And Nuren, I will do the job for you for a few beers. Why cant I help you on this one. Gt the spares. I ll do it. Make sure manifold is skeemed though. Will take it off and check anyway. If needed to send to egineering, we do that. R180-00. Local.

hte copper nuts that vlade is referring to have a little cut (slit) halfway through the top of them.

the little bit left is bent slightly down, and this is the bit that "locks" against the thread of the stud.

they shouldn't vibrate loose, and are able to withstand the heat!

should be available at any nuts and bolts place!

I guess this is the reason why I'm part of this club......awesome.

@Charl
Okay, PM me of how much you want for the gaskets.
I really just need the one between turbo & manifold.

@Freddie
Thanks guy, it's much appreciated let me know when is good for you then I can make arrangments.

@Vlade
I used only copper nuts, but after awhile they come loose. I know on the manifold (between turbo & manifold) Nissan supply this little metal plates that lock the bolts.
However there isn't a plate that locks the bolts on the manifold (from cylinder head to manifold)

Thanks guys for the help.

CChemCooladmin12 Feb 2007, 11:22

Nuren, Veecee on the spot there with nuts, easy to get (from head to manifold)

CChemCooladmin12 Feb 2007, 11:34

Nuren just check with Charl that you need between turbo and manifold, assumng from your thread you have gaskets available between head and manifold??

WWooHaa12 Feb 2007, 11:52

Since we are going to betaking the manifold out completely, I'll take the gaskets from Charl which is manifold/cylinder head & I will go & buy the other gasket (turbo & manifold from Nissan) including those locking plates.

Here's another thing, when I got my turbo back the oil feed bolt is very close to the manifold bolt, meaning that I don't see how we can take it out as they touch eachother.
I'll post a pic later, so that you understand.
I was told however that we can twist & turn thr turbo as it's only circlips that hold the thing together...is dis true?

CChemCooladmin12 Feb 2007, 12:06

I'll post a pic later, so that you understand.

Please pics yes. Not with you for a moment on this????

CChemCooladmin12 Feb 2007, 12:08

We take the oil feed pipe off from the side of the engine block and remove in total from the engin. So oil feed pipe comes out with turbo. Dont know if we miss each other here? I cant see a problem with that.

WWooHaa12 Feb 2007, 14:28

Sorry forlate response.
You are right freddie, but where the oil feed goes on top of the turbo, that bolt is blocking the other bolt that goes into the manifold.
I don't have the car here, bt I'll ask mummy dearest to take some pics & email it to me.

HHHHmmmm" Mummy can you please take pics of the turbo & manifold, at the join".....Hope she knows what I'm saying.

nuren. just a suggestion, before going to nissan, see if u can source the gasket set from autozone. the really impresessed me when I went there for my parts. ask for payen, the stuff is very good! get this, they even have the 200sx on their database. and I don't think they can up the price if u say 200sx. otherwise you can maybe make your own gasket for the turbo, I just don't know what the stock turbo gaskets look like, I make my own turbo gaskets. u get the paper from a spares shop...

WWooHaa12 Feb 2007, 14:55

Okay, I will take your advice & go to autozone. i know what the nissan one looks like so I will compare.

Thanks again. I also want to take those gaskets of your hands, where do you stay & how can I get them from you.

vveecee12 Feb 2007, 15:21

i dont think gasket paper will work very well in the heat of the manifolds in the *virginity* of the turbo.

i also use gasket paper, but for applications with less heat!

CCharl12 Feb 2007, 15:44

now that you mention it... we obviously have to make shure its high temprature paper... but I see when I take mine off I definitely cant use it again... its never leaked on me, but maybe it is better to buy a set than have to replace it every 5k kms

VVladeadmin13 Feb 2007, 06:42

Don't think you get high temperature gasket paper... well not that will withstand the heat of the manifold...

Ummm there is a thread somewhere on the forum where I posted how the quality gaskets look like, those work cool, i normally give it a very thin layer of gasket maker this will obviously melt in giving a nice seal.

CCharl13 Feb 2007, 09:41

This's what I'm using. Theres a thin metal sheet between the layers

VVladeadmin13 Feb 2007, 10:47

that "might" work for the manifold... but not between the turbo and manifold... only a metal gasket will last there...

I have used gum gum between the turbo and manifold, but was advised by Rezlo not to do it since excess might break off and damage the compressor wheel. Which makes sense.
