gents

s14 sr20det with vcd

rattel from head sounds like a diesel!!!
had the car a few ppl most of them sad it was the vct cam gear of the timing chain.

now this is the problem

1. replaced the vct cam gear! noise still there!! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ
2. whent to nissan and got a nice new chain and guides. gusse what fcuk noice still there! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

so now its only one ting to change LIFTERS ๐Ÿ™
nissan SA ask R1000-R1100 each X16= R17600 ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Q 1. do u need to change all of them??
Q 2. can u do solid lifters on the sr20det and what wil u need 2 change in the head?
Q 3. has anyone done dis conversion on there cars?

Did you replace the VVT sprocket with a new one or a second hand one? Did you oil it before putting it in? The noise could also be the chain hitting the top guide, you can remove this to test if it is.

Did you replace the timing chain tensioner?

There are only 8 hydraulic lifters in the SR20 and if you are worried about noises, don't go solid lifters as they aren't quiet. When you replace the lifters, you will need to measure the shims to make sure you have the correct sizes to prevent any noises.

Whilst you are in there, fit RAS (Rocker Arm Stoppers) as it will save your engine should your rocker arms decide to jump out of place/break.

But out of all of this if it sounds like a diesel my money is on the VVT sprocket still, maybe you were supplied with a dud or didn't oil it before putting it in which can cause a second hand one to start to rattle.

replaced it with second hand one! did not want to pay R8000 for a new one from nissan! and i just fitted it!!

how do u oil them?
yes got a new tensioner with the chain and guids

ddjtreble22 Mar 2011, 13:48

Did you test the second hand one before you put it in?
Oiling it is simply filling it with oil so that on first startup it isn't dry until the oil reaches it.

In which case your problem is still deffinately the VVT sprocket

and how can i test it to see if its good or not?
to oil it? thats the littel hole that is got?

On the car it came off is the only way to have tested it previously, or fitted it and tested before buying. But it's too late now if it's rattling.

If it rattles it's too late to put oil in but yes the small hole and I believe pouring oil at the back allows for oil to get in.

There is one other thing you can try which sorts out the VVT rattle on startup 80% of the time but the part has to be bought new from Nissan in SA as you don't get the S14a and S15 there very commonly. Replace the VVT Solanoid on the left of the engine right by the buldge in the head that houses the VVT sprocket

The one on the left is the old type and is crap, the one on the right is the revised version used in the late S14A's and S15's and has fixed VVT rattle on startup for me on two cars already.

Does yours rattle on startup or all the time? It may be that your selanoid is screwed and isn't allowing oil to your VVT on startup which is usually the reason for them going pre-maturely.

it rattles on start up and when ideling! but if i drive it it seems to go quiet!
or if its ideling and i put it in gear and leave the clutch a bit and pick up the revs it goes quiet! and keeping the revs at 2000 rpms and taking it out of gear the rattel starts again.

ddjtreble22 Mar 2011, 14:49

Deffinately VVT rattle. It probably rattled before, but if not then it was because it started dry (no oil) and on a second hand unit this can quickly start the rattle process.

I'd suggest getting a new/good second hand (tested) unit and replace the VVT Solanoid at the same time. Make sure you oil the replacements to prevent it happening again.

will go and see a good frend to see if his got a vvt solanoid for me! and cam gear! just not to clear here to oil the dame thing!

not to worried about noises of the sr its just the diesel sound thats driving me mad!

the VCT gear is only good for the 1st 150k... after that is just matter of time it will rattle

Thats why the red top is better.

aaep88622 Mar 2011, 15:11

^^ disable VCT gear... with normal gear and bolt... it the same~!
my S15 had HKS adjustable gears in and ex... the only solution was throw VCT gear out... and VCT is not that great at all!!!

ddjtreble22 Mar 2011, 15:11

The milleage it has before it rattles is irrelevant. Granted they all go at sometime or another but oil quality, frequency of changes, condition of solanoid and so much more can affect how long this lasts.

The black top has an awesome mid range due to the VVT. I'll put up with the noise (as it causes no damage) for that lovely mid range from the blacktop.

DD2 S1422 Mar 2011, 15:20

ok so where can i get a normal cam gear to see if it is the problem?
dont want to spend more money if that not the problem!!

and what is the chance its the lifters?

ddjtreble22 Mar 2011, 15:28

It's deffinately not the lifters with your symptoms

You can unplug the VVT solanoid to check, if the noise is gone when unplugged you know it's the VVT sprocket.

DD2 S1422 Mar 2011, 15:38

i have done that! and its still dieselling

ddjtreble22 Mar 2011, 17:11

Just confirm quickly, when you put it into 1st gear and rev to an over 1500rpm, does the noise dissapear? If so then it deffinately is the VVT as that is the point when the oil pressure increases in the front of the sprocket and engages VVT.

EDIT: Just read on of your previous posts and the above does happen so it is your VVT. If it was your lifters the noise wouldn't dissapear like that.

Can I ask you to try one more thing? Can you diconnect the nuetral position sensor for the gearbox and try it like that? This in theory should cure it and I will explain why when I get the results from you.
