You guys are correct...

Glad Im not checking clearances 😂

My mistake , 1853 cc after correction

PPhinx03 Dec 2007, 13:25

Damn just got a phone call I also broke a ring landing ? ? ? ?

wwidowmaker03 Dec 2007, 13:38

starting to wonder if these cars weren't maybe designed to implode after 15 years...

PPhinx03 Dec 2007, 16:21

Ok Spoke to Craig (The guy building my motor)

Number 1 Pistons Rod Cap bearing was out of Spec but that didnt cause the noise, It seems the ring landing on Piston number 1 failed at Comp 1.

He says there are no signs of detting so Im not sure why it went?

vveecee03 Dec 2007, 16:28

just buy my motor! it seems i need more POWA to drift with cos i drift like i've got NA powa.

clearly i need more FFFFFFLLLLLLOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!! so i want to buy a straight 6 turbo!

VVladeadmin03 Dec 2007, 18:20

Ring land failure first time I've heard that it happen to an CA18 but its not uncommon under the VW's... 🙁

Maybe its was just age or a buildup of fatigue due to hard driving 8)

But you got forged units now right, so no worries isn't it 😉 But one would like to know the cause so one can prevent it in future.

PPhinx15 Dec 2007, 06:39

Im so happy I could honestly Shit myself...

I finally got the motor back yesterday, Here are some pic2s going to start working on it now...

The broken Ring landing...

The Pistons in the bores

here is why the motor need a rebuild, All the bearings were in Spec but the ring landing failed on piston number 1 , Why I don't know there are no sings of detting no hot spots , 0.8 psi boost and 16 degrees of timing :badboy

Skimmed an lightened flywheel

How long does it take you guys to assemble a motor because it took me around 3 day to complete?

Every single Nut and Bolt was washed and cleaned with steel wool. Also my new water-pump was fucked so I used the old 5000km one
Every Bolt hole was cleaned with ear buds to confirm good seating with the ARP stuff and normal bolts.

I’m showing good compression on all cylinders a just by hand cranking now all I need to do is attach the flywheel and clutch then we are good to go.

About a day... 😉 but then again, I've done it 5 times now, but only if everything is prepared, with cleaning and so forth also about 3 days even longer.

Yeah its important to keep all bolts and there surfaces clean to get proper torque ratings out of them...

Glad to see it coming along... we must sommer confirm you for the 22nd event, cuz it looks like you'll be done way before then. 😀

GGary5718 Dec 2007, 13:41

Cleaning the nuts and bolt is just a tin of petrol/prepsol and a rag to wipe dry.

A complete motor rebuild should take about4 hours if done properly, I am not including putting it back in the car and starting it just the assembly.

vveecee18 Dec 2007, 13:50

it takes me days, cos i like to smoke and have a few beers and talk kak with the friends, in between taking a break every 20 minutes.

Great Phinx....happy days ahead

PPhinx23 Dec 2007, 19:36

Well The Motor has been put in this weekend.
But I have to Thank Brenwin (sokar) and Claus for there assistance in installing the motor.

There have been a few small problems, Oil leak at the rear crank seal
Only one of the new guages seems to work.

The motor Idles fine, There are no serious problems or noises.
The motor has been put through it first section of "Hard break-in practice"

Its been at 85 % or the rev range and full boost a few times to get the rings to seat correctly and the oil has been changed

DDracomoderator24 Dec 2007, 08:18

Sounds great Phinx, seems all the money and time paid off...great to hear.

Why is it something always leeks.....

PPhinx27 Dec 2007, 08:51

Good Morning Guys....

Just a quick update, Ok two out of my 3 gauges are working, The Voltmeter isn’t…
Central looking is working now aswell …

Oil pressure (when warm) is 1,5 bar at Idle and 5 bat at 3000rpm
Oil pressure when cold 4,5 at at idle

Oil Temp is around 100 C it drops down to around 90 C when on the highway and goes to around 120 C in traffic…
It takes around 10 minutes to warm up to 100 C

This damn Cometic is weeping again, and I have rebuilt my clutch cylinder because it’s hard to select gears and still is.
The car has a slight stutter when driving cold,

The Cosmetic head gasket? I read some stuff prior to fitting mine, many guys complained about it...

PPhinx27 Dec 2007, 11:33

Yep read the same stuff about it leaking...

I feel like I should have gone with the Copper gasket and O-ringed the block.

Its weeping on the intake side at the back, The car has around 300Km on.
Hoping she lasts , The Knife edging has made her real smooth...

VVladeadmin27 Dec 2007, 12:52

Ummm just check your torque on that gasket, most forums recommended torque the thing 109 nm with the ARP studs, with no re-torquing required. Have no problems with it as of yet.
